Unable to connect to the internet at my university but am able to at home

Post by coopdog218 »

Hello. I am able to connect to the internet on my Ubuntu virtual machine, but when I try at my university it does not connect. I have tried with a number of networks at my university, none of which work: a secure network, an unsecure guest network, and eduroam. Any idea what the issue could be? Thanks in advance.

The university may have filtering hardware or software that prevents connecting from an unauthorized OS or from multiple OS's connecting through one network connection. This kind of filtering is quite possible if you're using Virtualbox's Bridged. Also, the U's wi-fi access point may not work with Bridged, see Virtualbox Networks: In Pictures: Bridged Adapter

VirtualBox's NAT is much more likely to work for getting internet in the VM.

Which network type is your VM using?
