Can't access USB drive after the guest crashed

Hi,
My guest XP recently crashed due to a host disk error. The vdi file went from 12GB to 0GB
Not the end of the world as I had backed it up
but my problem is that the USB drive that was being used by the crashed guest is now not successfully detected when I plug it into any machine.
I get a 'Device was not successfully installed' message when I plug it into an XP host and it doesn't appear in Device Manager. I've tried it in 2 different pcs in USB ports that are working.
Anyone got any ideas on how to make the USB drive detectable again?
