Error 67 on "net use" for initial Share folder

Post by rtwells »

Newbie - I have installed 1.6.6 to a Windows XP Pro 2002 SP 2 system
I have created a vdi which resides on a USB stick Guest is Windows XP PRo 2002
Installed 1.6.6 GA

Guest boots fine.

I have searched forums and cannot find similar symptoms using these host/guest combinations.

Non-seamless, Shared folders icon shows:
Hover over icon "\\vboxsvr\MyDocuments\...\My Documents"
Machine Folder-> MyDocuments c:\..\My Documents Full
Opened a command window on the Guest
typed "net use x: \\vboxsvr\MyDocuments

I receive an error " System error 67 has occured. The network name cannot be found"

Network settings are:
Adaptor 1 : PCnet-FAST III (NAT)

I'm certain that this is PEBCAK ;)
Any ideas?

What happens if you share a different folder, for example one on your desktop? Does that work? If it does, then your problem is that you are sharing a 'private' folder. There are/were some issues where users were not able to share their My Documents or Home folder, but they could share a subfolder from there, or the parent folder.

Attempted using other shares

Post by rtwells »

I have setup 4 other shares, some on the root of C, and none show up.
It seems like the \\vboxsvr is not recognized by the network.

Is there someway to ensure that \\vboxsvr is legitimate.

Also, would like to sanity check, what I am attempting to do is create a "shared folder" on the host that is accessible from the guest.

Again, pretty sure this is a user induced error.

I do not understand the statement from stefan.

I dont understand it, too :)

Forget, overread this. Both are 1.66 as you wrote.

Danke meine herr, Ich habe viele Fragen :)

What I am ultimately attempting to do is to create an ultra-portable set of development tools that will reside on a virtual machine, that I may carry from site to site - instead of packing my laptop. So the VDI is on a USB stick.
I have attempted to use shared folders that reside on the USB stick and also on the physical disk of the host.

If you installed the GA without any error, it should work. Are you sure that there is no mentioning of the Virtualbox Shared Folders listing in Entire Network?
You can always use a normal network share, and if you use NAT, connect to 10.0.2.2 for them.

GA installation confirmation

Post by rtwells »

Sasquatch,

Thanks so much for the reply, I have a statement that might help and a question

1. I saw in another post, (Dec 6, 2007 Jose Domingo), someone inserted a picture of a screen shot that shows in icon that is labeled "VirtualBox GA" I do not have this icon.

Here is a link to the image
http://img228.imageshack.us/my.php?imag ... 250cj8.jpg

2. How do you verify that the GA was inserted?

As you can see in that screenshot, you know when the GA are installed correctly if you have an icon in the system tray (area next to the clock). And you can always browse your Network Places > Entire Network (you can pick it from the blue option bar on the left in the explorer). You will see an additional network called Virtualbox Shared Folders.

Thanks again for answering my question.

1. On my Guest in the system tray, I have a VB cube icon which when I hover over I am presented with "SunxVM VirtualBox Guest Additions 1.6.4r33808.

2. On the VBox tray below the windows start bar I have a blue folder that when I hover over the folder I see a popup with
"Indicates the activity of the shared folders
\\vboxsvr\Documents J:\Documents
\\vboxsvr\SharedDocs C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents
\\vboxsvr\ZebraRT C:\Documents and Settings\costco110\My Documents\ZebraRT
\\vboxsvr\vboxshare J:\vboxshare"

J: is a USB stick which also contains the vdi for the Guest
C: is the Host c drive.

3. When I open My Network Places on the Guest, I see a single Icon under Local Network "SharedDocs on VBOX (Vbox-zrt1)

4. When I click on "Add a Network place" and enter "10.0.2.2" and browes, I am able to see "VirtualBox Shared Folders" beneath the "Entire Network", however, there are no folders beneath here, the OK button is grayed out, and the "Make New Folder" button reports "You cannot create a folder here."

5. When I "Add Network Place" and enter "\\vboxsvr\Documents" I receive the error "The folder you entered does not appear to be valid. Please choose another."

Same is true for \\vboxsvr\SharedDocs
Same is true for \\vboxsvr\ZebraRT
Same is true for \\vboxsvr\vboxshare

I have gone back to section 4.6 on folder sharing and honestly do not see anything that I have done wrong.

Any more ideas?

Thanks so much!

Did you update the GA? The tray icon says you run 1.6.4, but in the OP you mention 1.6.6. Please make them consistent. If it still doesn't work, you can try a full upgrade to 2.0.2 of VB and update the GA accordingly.

VB and GA releases

Post by rtwells »

Thanks again! I misspoke earlier, both versions are 1.6.4

I also performed a ipconfig -all on the guest and noticed that the hostname for the guest has been set to vbox-zrt1, it is not blank.

I have found some additional assistance locally, we will be trying a few things this afternoon (GMT-8).

I will upgrade to 2.0.2 first, and post all results here.

Thanks so much for your time!

2.0.2 dies

Post by rtwells »

Bad news, I uninstalled 1.6.4 and have installed 2.0.2. 2.0.2 won't start "Failed to create the VirtualBox COM object."

Callee RC: CO_E_SERVER_EXEC_FAILURE (0x8008005)

Uninstalled 2.0.2 and reinstalled - same error.

That error does seem to happen from time to time. Usually a reinstall should work, but a repair might also work. If you search the forum with Google, you might find another solution.
If you don't want to use 2.0.x and switch back to 1.6.6, read the 1.6.6 announcement about the downgrade.

Problem solved!

Post by rtwells »

Sasquatch, thanks for all of your assistance.
I uninstalled 2.0.2 and installed 1.66
I started the guest and installed GA 1.66
This required a reboot of the guest and after reboot I configured a Machine folder on the c drive of the host as a shared folder
Then I opened a command window and executed the command:
net use s: \\vboxsvr\<Shared Folder>

Command completed successfully an directory listing of the s: on the guest shows the contents of the c drive shared folder on the host!

Sincere thanks!
Rick
