Windows auto update: Can no longer start VM(missing file)

Post by schwim »

Hello there!

I awoke this morning to a Windows update that must have gone awry; windows couldn't be interacted with, frozen apps, etc. I restarted the machine and tried to start my VM but I got an ambiguous error. I opened VBox and see "Inaccessible" under the VM and in the info box:
Runtime error opening 'D:\VirtualBox VMs\BL - Lithium\BL - Lithium.vbox' for reading: -102 (File not found.).
F:\tinderbox\win-6.1\src\VBox\Main\src-server\MachineImpl.cpp[754] (long __cdecl Machine::i_registeredInit(void)).
Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Component: MachineWrap
Interface: IMachine {85632c68-b5bb-4316-a900-5eb28d3413df}
Looking in the VM folder, I find this:
Capture.PNG
Capture.PNG (76.55 KiB) Viewed 768 times

I don't have a back up this folder and I don't want to hurt my chances of getting it up and running again. What can I do, if anything, to get this VM up and running again?

Thanks for your time!

We can't see your image. IMG tags only work for pictures previously uploaded with Upload Attachment. Pictures can and should be posted using the forum's Upload Attachment tab on the first day first post.

If your folder contains a file called "BL - Lithium.vbox-tmp" or "BL - Lithium.vbox-prev", rename the file to "BL - Lithium.vbox". You might need to log off and on the host to get the change to recognize.

Work on that. :D The host is a computer, and computers do fail. Restorable backups are as ubiquitous a requirement today as Internet.

Rename the ".vbox-tmp" file to ".vbox".

Thank you both very much, that did the trick!

I'll handle the images differently in the future and I'll figure out a backup scenario for the directory. Thanks again!
