[Solved] VBOX wont open VMS after windows update

Post by hobsoni »

I have just had Windows 10 updates forced upon me. Since then none of my Ubuntu 20.04 VMs will start, and the Ubuntu 18.04 VM starts but only gives a black screen - no error message, and it does not start booting.

The updates applied were: KB5012418, KB5013353, KB5013534, KB5012117 and KB5012599 (in that order).

Following the instructions in the Ubunutu 20.04 error message, attached is VBox.log (.zipped) for one of the failing machines.

The error popup asked for the .png also, but that does not exist.

All the machines worked properly yesterday before the windows updates.

Help sorting this out would be most welcome.

Regards
Ian

We see this guru error a lot recently from users of Win7 hosts, but it looks like you are using superfluous third party antivirus (Avast or AVG) on Win10 for some reason.

The short term fix is to go into the AV settings and turn off "Hardware assisted virtualization".

The long term fix is to ask yourself the questions: (1) why do you believe that Microsoft don't know how to protect their own OS? And (2) do you believe that allowing third parties to mess about at kernel level on your PC increases or decreases your security? Sure, back in Win98 days it could be said that MS didn't take the malware threat seriously, but that was 24 years ago - things have moved on.

Thanks for the quick response.

I have been using some programs since forever - (I threw out the Thunderbird install 3.5" floppy disks about 3 weeks ago, and I am still using Thunderbird) so AVG may well have been in use for 25 years!

I have also taken out KB5012599 and he problem has gone away.

Will switch AVG out, reapply update and see what happens.

Can report that using MS Defender, with the KB5012599 installed and AVG removed, everything is working as it should.
