Guru Meditation - VERR_VMM_SET_JMP_ABORTED_RESUME

Post by MikeHome »

I have been using VB successfully for several years, hosted on Win7 with several different guest OS. (XP, Win7, Ubuntu).
On 27th March 2022, several Guest OS all stopped working with error:

00:00:12.547225 !! VCPU0: Guru Meditation -2708 (VERR_VMM_SET_JMP_ABORTED_RESUME)

Attached zip has log files for both Win7 and Unbuntu guests which were previously running perfectly, but now both produce the same error.
I have not made any VM configuration changes.

I have searched and read a number of past posts on your forum, but cannot find any reference to the error: VERR_VMM_SET_JMP_ABORTED_RESUME.
One post made me think it could be caused by an update to my Anti-Virus (AV) software in the host.
I am using AVAST on the host, and have used the disable feature to disable all shields, but that does not seem to help.
Should I completely uninstall the AV software?

Do you know what causes this error?

Thank you for any assistance or advice that you can provide.

Please try uninstalling the AV and rebooting. Let us know what happens.

I have disabled the AV and also done a reboot, and now both Guest VMs are working, so it must be the AVAST anti-virus software on the host causing the problem.

Can you please recommend an AV (preferably free) that is compatible with VB and runs on Win7?

Thank you for your assistance.

We are not really in a position to recommend software for unsupported hosts, but if it was me then I'd try to get Windows Defender installed. But I'm afraid I have no idea how actively the Win7 version is maintained - if at all.

Thanks for letting us know!

I run 7 in a VM with Microsoft Security Essentials installed, and it recently got an AV update. So MS might be still supporting 7 in a basic manner.

You might try looking at if Avast has exception capability, then try setting exceptions to not scan any Virtualbox folders.

Thank you for your help and advice. I will investigate exclusion options in AVAST and failing that will investigate Windows Defender & MS-Essentials for Win7 support status.

Kind Regards MikeHome.

A user of Avast pinned this down: Avast is using hardware virtualization, which prevents Virtualbox from using it. See viewtopic.php?f=1&t=105661#p515784
