Please help

Post by Freankh »

I need to adress a problem. Since 2 years, I cannot update windows 10.
It says I have to de-istall oracle virtual box 5.0.12 first. I downloaded this from the archive.
But I cannot install it or anything.
"It asks me "the feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other... that is not avaiable."
It tried to extract it. I tried everything. What is wrong?

I dont even know, what it is for, or why I installed it. It destroyed my whole system.

It wants me, to tell it, where the setup files are located. This is why I tried to extract the package. Did not work also. He asks for an *.msi file. Totally paradox.

Here is how to provide the MSI file:

Download the Windows Virtualbox version exe from the Older Builds link in Downloads.
Make a temporary folder on you computer to hold the extracted files, like C:\VBOXMSI.
in a regular command prompt window, drag the downloaded exe file. The full path and file name of the exe will appear at the command prompt.
Type {space}--extract{space}--path{space}
Drag the temporary folder you made on the command window. The path and name of the folder will appear in the command window.
The command will look like this:

Code: Select all

drive:\path\to\VirtualBox-[versionnumber]-Win.exe --extract --path c:\VBOXMSI
The MSI will be in that temporary folder.

Note there's one annoying glitch with the installer. A message box which does not have an accompanying icon in the taskbar will display the results of the last command. If you leave this message box open, further runs of commands with the .exe file will not do anything. You will have to find the message box and close it. And if you minimize all the windows with the Desktop Peek tool you may not be able to find it to close it.

During install and uninstall, Windows MSI is operating, not Virtualbox. It sounds like your host's MSI database is hosed. That does happen. Please see the following Microsoft help topics: Basic troubleshooting steps for Windows Installer
Enable Windows Installer logging
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-US/troubl ... er-logging
If MSI logging can be enabled, the log may show why Virtualbox installs are having a problem. Repairing MSI might fix the problem.

Regrettably, this problem you're having is with your Microsoft Windows, not Virtualbox. You'll have to get help from Microsoft support to fix the MSI system, then you'll be able to install and uninstall programs.

Btw. when I wanna instal or uninstall something, this works only a few minutes after Windows Start. Lateron, it always tells me, there would be another installation be going on already. This problem, I have for one year now.

I now CAN install the latest big update H2 at the end, but it results in a bluescreen. But rollback worked.

The only thing I can suggest now is a fresh install of the host OS.

The repair msi program you linked, is from 2015, I see now. Windows 10 was not even out then!

Restore from the backups you took before making the changes.

Going to lock this topic to be sure you understand that we cannot help, since the problem is with your particular Windows OS, not Virtualbox, and so we don't have to filter further F-words from you. Please ask Microsoft how to fix this, they can help.
