Impossible to create a new shared folder

Post by ClaudioLooping »

Hello
As shown in the attachment, when trying and share a folder from my Windows 11 Laptop to a VirtualBox Ubuntu VM, whatever I try, the "OK" button is never enabled ; consequently, I can't create the share and go forward in my training.
Should anybody have an idea, then feel free to share
Until then, my searches on the web were unsuccessful
Thx

Can you show us that the folder you try to share already exists?

You have to choose an existing folder - VirtualBox doesn't create the folder.

Hello
As I've selected the folder from the dialog box, it has to exist. If not, I wouldn't see it

Strange - as the picture below shows I have no trouble filling in dialog fields to describe a folder that does not exist, and you will also note that the OK button is grayed out like yours.

I would rather see the evidence I asked for instead of assurances.

On my Windows 10 6.1.32 host, when I used the folder selection dropdown to pick an existing folder, the OK button enabled (no longer gray). Here is the folder I picked:
Shared folders select folder.png
Shared folders select folder.png (6.61 KiB) Viewed 1270 times
However, like Mpack above, when I typed an additional subfolder name after the selected folder path, and that added subfolder did not exist, the OK button disabled, grayed out. I added '\nonexist':
select folder add nonexist.png
select folder add nonexist.png (7.04 KiB) Viewed 1270 times
When I added a subfolder '\exist' that did exist, the OK button enabled again once the full existing folder name was typed in:
shared folder add exist.png
shared folder add exist.png (7.03 KiB) Viewed 1270 times
If I went to the 3DObjects folder in the File Explorer and deleted the "exist" folder, then accidentally backspaced then replaced a letter off the path ending in "\exist" in the selection dropdown, the previously-enabled OK button disabled and remains disabled.

In short, a subfolder typed in on the selected path must exist. And the folder path must continue to exist while working with the Virtualbox Shared Folders selection window.

Thus I surmise one of two things:
  • that the folder path ending in "mProjects" was the folder picked in the selection dropdown, and that the subfolder "\mrbeat" was typed in later but doesn't actually exist yet.
  • the folder "mrbeat" was picked in the selection dropdown but was deleted or renamed before the selection window could be closed.
It could be that there is another scenario that has not been discovered yet where the OK button can be grayed out despite an existing valid path in the selection dropdown.

If you know for certain the full "mrbeat" path is valid, and you selected the "mrbeat" folder in the dropdown, yet the OK button remains grayed out, please provide a single screenshot, like the one in the next post, containing the following:
  • A File Explorer window showing the "mrbeat" folder with the full address bar of the window showing the path to "mrbeat".
  • The Virtualbox Shared Folders window pointing to the "mrbeat" folder path and the OK button being grayed out.

Thx a lot for all the time you have spent and the answers provided
Actually, while performing the screen copies you've asked for, I've found why the OK button was dimmed.
It was because, in the .ova file provided to me, there was already a "mrbeat" shared folder

Problem solved
Thx again
