i have a vb of ubuntu 20.04.3 that crashes while initalizing. after the ubuntu symbol with the spinning circle i get a bunch of text and then a non flashing cursor. last thing i did was install dnsmasq and netstat and then play around with them to get my dnsmasq to work like the one in the school videos. i had to service stop my systemd.resolver to get my dnsmasq to even startup. i didnt change systemd config and i think thats where my problem is.
i used [service systemd.resolved stop | service dnsmasq start ] to start my dnsmasq because i couldnt get dns to start. i had the port 53 problem where dns cant start because port 53 is in use. i never set the config file for systemd.resolved so there may be a problem from there. i used the dig command a couple of times for playing around, tracking myself in the machine. then i tried [ sudo service dnsmasq stop ] a couple differnt ways to try to get to [ sudo dnsmasq -d -q ] but i couldnt achieve it after a couple times and i tried restarting the machine to see if that'd do anything (have you tried turning it off and on again?) which lead to the system crashing in startup.
i have virtualbox 6.1, im hosting on windows 11, using ubuntu 20.04.3 for the machine, im using the machine to learn admin with.
how do i fix this problem in virtualbox?
i have tried starting with my ubuntu iso loaded but that didnt get me to a secure open on mine. all files were in tact as per the ubuntu loadup.
my solution for the time being will be to make a new vb with a fresh install on it.

Re: vm of ubuntu crashing after installing and playing with dnsmasq
Start the VM from full normal shutdown, not save-state. Run until you see the problem happen, then shut down the VM from within the VM's OS if possible. If not possible, close the Virtualbox window for the VM with the Power Off option set.
Right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, choose Show Log. Save the far left tab's log, zip it, and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

Re: vm of ubuntu crashing after installing and playing with dnsmasq
this is actually a freeze, not a crash. after purusing the forums i would like to make a correction. i dont konw how to change the main post. but this is a freeze, because nothing is happening not a crash where it turns off. i ran the vm for 10 mins compared to the 1 minute i ran for the first log and same result. nothing.

Try increasing graphics RAM to 128MB. Reduce CPU cores to 2.
Install Guest Additions less ancient than the 6.0.0 release you're currently on.
Installing the host Extension Pack is probably a good idea too.

Re: vm of ubuntu freezing after installing and playing with dnsmasq
i modified the video mem to 128 and lowered to 2 cores, no change.
i tried loading the host additions into the optical drive and i couldnt get that to download.
ive made a new machine with about the same settings (25g overall storage instead of 10) and it seems to be working fine.
heres the log from the latest startup. my other machine that works turns on just fine, maybe a second or two of hesitation.
dont quite know how else to install anything as i cant the os to boot all the way.
i have the 6.1 ver of VB, dont know if that counts as a 6.0
thanks for the help guys!!!
