Virtualbox throwing a winverifytrust failed on stub executable error when trying to run 5.2.44 on wi

Title explains it all. Whenever I try to start virtualbox on windows server 2008 it gives me an error along the lines of "winverifytrust failed on stub executable: winverifytrust failed with hrc=CERT_E_CHAINING". I've tried uninstalling kb3081320 with no luck.

Looks like the title cut off. Probably too long.

Start the VM from full power off, not save-state. Run until you see the problem happen, then shut down the VM from within the VM OS if possible. If not possible, close the Virtualbox window for the VM with the Power Off option set.

Please right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, choose Show Log. Save the far left tab's log and the next tab over (the hardening log), zip both files, and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

Lately the world seems to have moved on from SHA1 security hashing and gone to SHA256. It could be that you need to web-search from Microsoft how to add SHA256 security hashing to a Vista/7/Server 2008 r1/r2 OS.

Its running virtual box on windows server 2008 thats the problem, not a VM

Yes I understand that. The instructions are for diagnosing a host hardening problem, which you are having. As well as the security hashing problem.

I'll try installing SHA256 first since I think it might be that. Also I cant get the log since I'm running on an actual machine

The logs are held in the physical computer not in the VM. But please let us know how the SHA256 thing goes.

It would seem that because virtualbox hasnt been able to start at least once it hasnt created a log file (or at least one I can find). I stumped on trying to install SHA256. I also realised I hadnt uploaded the full error message which is "WinVerifyTrust failed on stub executable: WinVerifyTrust failed with hrc=CERT_E_CHAINING on 'Device/Harddiskvolume1/Program Files/Oracle/VirtualBox/VirtualBox.exe' (rc=_22919)

where: VirtualBox what: 1 VERR_DRVI_UNSUPPORTED_ARCH (-2919) - Unsupported image target architecture"

I have no clue what most of it means but maybe it'll make more sense to someone else?

Does this mean the main Virtualbox window? Or a VM? Has Virtualbox ever worked on this host before? If so, what changed since the last time it worked?

Please go to c:\Users\{yourloggedonaccount} and zip the .Virtualbox folder. Post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

I've never had Virtualbox working on this machine before since its newly set up. The host OS is Windows Server 2008. It would seem there is no .virtualbox folder?

I think the most important part is the "where: VirtualBox what: 1 VERR_DRVI_UNSUPPORTED_ARCH (-22919) - Unsupported image target architecture" as it doesnt show in the error message shown on the link you sent. Its got me stumped so for now I'll just downgrade and see if that helps

There was an intermediate forum page in my web-browsing where your error was shown and the linked blog was pointed out as the OP's fix. Try web-searching various texts of the error. The link seems to imply that Virtualbox may not be installed correctly yet.

I think upgrading to SHA256 would probably solve it but since I cant be bothered figuring it out I'll just downgrade to 4.2
