I tested like you waiting for the installation of the Guest Additions.science2002 wrote:I noticed that one needed to be patient (10min or more) when the installer stacks at the point shown (video driver) at the beginning of this thread.
I have to wait about 15 minutes.
I found another post that talks about the same "bug" that science2002 and I have, I don't know if I can point it out here.
it is dated 02 April 2021, recent, written by MawPaw and is titled in Windows Guests "Guest Additions Hangs on Install".
He also writes to wait, like me, 15 minutes before completing the installation of the Guest Additions.
In that post we talk about overcoming the "bug" by using a static IP address or increasing the RAM on the Guest PC.
I also tested these two conditions and they didn't work.
We are 3 people who have encountered the same problem.
There aren't many but at least I don't feel alone.
I tested this condition and it worked.scottgus1 wrote:One recent report on Guest Additions install oddness on XP said, if I remember correctly, that disconnecting the network to the XP VM while installing GAs might clear up the 10-minute delay.
I arrived at this result after several tests.
I want to clarify that I have tried to find a sequence that is as fast as possible and that does not make the virtual PC exit and enter several times.
I create a new Guest PC, setting the RAM and the size of the disk unit according to my needs to be used on Windows XP Pro 32 bit.
Before installing the ISO file, I'm going to set up the Guest PC:
Shared clipboard, bidirectional;
Drag and drop, bidirectional;
Able I / O APIC;
Enable PAE / NX;
128 MB video memory;
I enable 3D Acceleration (this could be avoided, you wrote me that with the latest Guest Additions it is not used);
In storage I select the ISO file to use for the installation of Windows XP Pro 32 bit and important thing I enable Live CD / DVD to correctly install the optical reader in the Guest PC and avoid having a bug on the optical reader (I opened another post where I indicated problems of non-reading of double layer DVDs);
On the Net I use the Card with bridge (you will ask me, but you have not written that the Net must be deactivated? I'll explain later why I activated the Net);
I enter the settings to use a USB stick;
I share a folder by enabling Automount.
Once the configuration is complete, I start the installation of Windows XP Pro 32 bit.
Once the installation is complete, I configure the static IP address of the Network and from the Guest PC menu, from Devices, I remove the Windows XP Pro 32 bit installation ISO file and select the host reader.
I close the Guest PC, restart the Guest PC and from the Guest PC menu insert the Guest Additions ISO file.
The Guest Additions installation window opens automatically and as you proceed, the installation ends without waiting.
The reason for this absurd thing?
I don't know why.
If I don't follow this step by step procedure. Guest Additions do not install quickly.
Another test, after completing the installation of the ISO file of Windows XP Pro 32 bit, at the start of the Guest PC, I configure the static IP address of the Network and from the menu of the Guest PC, from Devices, I remove the Windows XP installation ISO file Pro 32 bit and select the Guest Additions ISO file.
The Guest Additions installation window does not open automatically, I have to open it from Computer, Optical reader.
The Guest Additions installation starts and I have to wait 15 minutes before completing it.
To summarize, to conclude the installation of the Guest Additions quickly, on Windows XP Pro 32 bit, you need to:
Or start the Guest PC in safe mode;
Or disable the Network card;
Or wait 15 minutes;
Or that "nonsense" sequence that I experienced.
Could any of you who are native English speakers or fluent in English please contact the programmers and report this "bug"?
