UBUNTU SERVER Kernel requires features 0:6 (with Enable PAE)

Post by bazianm »

Hi,

I am running Ubuntu Server LTS 8.04 on VB 2.0.2. The host OS is Windows XP and I am using a Dell Notebook with an INtel Pentium M processor.

I cannot boot after install. I get the old error of "This kernel requires features not present on this CPU 0:6. Unable to boot..."

I checked it out and i know this is not a new error. The solution recommended is to enable PAE but I have done that. (In fact, in 2.0.2, it is automatically enabled).

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

No, this feature is not automatically enabled. Did you enable this setting in the VM settings? Does your host support PAE? Probably not, AFAIR, the Pentium-M does not provide this feature.

Thanks for the response...

When I set up the VM in 2.0.0, I made sure the box is checked. Then I upgraded to 2.0.2 and checked the properties of the VM and it was:

a) disabled
b) checked

So I thought it was checked.

As for the Pentium M not providing the feature, I don't know what it is so I could not say.

In any event, do you have any ideas for a work around?

A work around is boot the VM with the install disc again and drop to a rescue terminal. From there, install a different kernel, like the -virtual. Reboot the Guest and select the newly installed kernel. You can then remove the -server kernel.

OK... That worked.

Is there any way I can install the virtual kernel off the bat? I'll tell you why. I am demonstrating setting up a LAMP box as part of a seminar I am giving (the entire seminar is on windows development with MySQL and I want to show how easy it is to setup a LAMP box -- which it normally is). I would love for it to go on the first try... it would be cleaner. If I have to do it in two passes, that's ok too...

Thanks for the answer...

Well, since there is PAE, and the option works (you won't be able to use 64 bit guests), you just have to find the right hardware that fully supports it. My laptop does it, which has an Intel Core Duo T2300. I think, and I'm not sure, that the Intel Pentium Mobile just doesn't have the PAE extension in the CPU.
