I have XP SP3 running as a guest on a Dell Laptop (Studio 1535) vista 64 SP1 host, with no problems.
There is tho one thing, I cannot receive Audio from the XP guest.
I have tried all of the options on the virtualbox UI and nothing..
I added some pictures to show all of the options that I have tried:

Does anyone knows How can I enable Audio to my guest machine ?
Thanks,
Ron

Your AC'97, DirectSound setting is the one that works for my XP Guests.
I suppose get stupid questions out of the way first. Does the audio show as ok in the guest device manager? Have you checked that audio is not muted in the guest?
No sound

I have the same problem,
the only difference is the OS - I'm using openSuse 11 as host.
at first I installed an old version of Win XP SP2, afterwards I updated to SP3, everytime with the same result. The audio driver provided by virtualbox don't work for me.
The Audio option was during different install enabled in various combinations.... result nothing.
Also I tried to install the soundmax driver from ASUS Cd ( I know - that is not what I have to do using VBox) and I have recieved an error message, of missing the HDA Audio Bus Driver.
So I have searched the internet for this driver and I have found one called Universal Audio Architecture Driver. The installs of this driver failed, indicating the wrong OS - Version.
So my conclusion is - that the audio problem comes from the hardware.
I am using a new ASUS - Board - M2N - SLI Deluxe, with an AMD Dual Core 6400+ and 4GB - Ram.
On my old MOBO sound was ok with the same WinXP SP2 version.

I guess I'm forced to reveal that nagalr later pm'ed me and admitted he had accidentally muted the audio inside the guest, using the guests audio control.
So, unless you have also muted the guest audio then you do not have the same problem. Also, you are using an OpenSUSE host, so you probably shouldn't be raising this issue in the "Windows Hosts" forum - my guess is that a different host is a very relevant difference with this problem.

I don't think thats a host OS problem, I think its an incompatibility between WinXP and new hardware and missing drivers.
I have read about it in different forums, that the same problem exists, when you try to install WinXP as host. In many cases you have to install manualy the Universal Audio Architecture driver, to install your sound card correctly.
If I'm informed correctly, virtualbox is creating a virtual sound card. This sound card normally use the Intel8021 driver for HDA Sound devices.
This Intel driver isn't recognized as the correct driver for the simulated hardware.
This night I will give a try to an other Win OS and will report the results.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. The WinXP guest does not see any new hardware, it sees old hardware (virtualized, but XP doesn't know that), which the standard install CD already has drivers for, eg. AC'97. The simulated/virtual hardware needs access to working host drivers (eg. DirectSound on a Windows host), but if working host drivers are present then the guest audio should work, regardess of how new the host hardware is, or how old the guest drivers are.
But, I know nothing about audio drivers in your OpenSUSE host, which is why I think you should ask the question again in a more appropriate (Linux hosts) forum.
