Restoring a Discarded Snapshot??

Post by Frosty615 »

Hi All,
Bit of a problem has arisen and I need to know if all is lost or not.....
A user Discard the current snapshot and state which they really shouldn't have done.....I really don't want to say it was me but.....

However said 'user' made a copy of the virtual machine from the copy in the D:\Virtual Machines\VS01 folder (where VS01 is the virtual machine).

Is there anyway or 'restoring' the machine using this copy of the original i.e. reverting back to the snapshot before it was discarded??

Many Thanks
Frosty

When you say "discard" do you mean it was deleted, or the snapshot was reverted back?

Is the copy VM a copy of the original+snapshot VDIs? It sounds like you just made a copy of the XML files?

I used the discard option from the right click in the VM gui.

The files copied were all the files I could find in the folder that was the VM.
So vdi, sav and xml........

I don't use saved states, so I've never had to use the Discard option. But, it looks like this feature should only discard the state file, not the VDI or the VM. Did someone use Delete as well?

If you have all the necessary files (including the VirtualBox.xml file from the VBox app folder) then it should be possible to restore the previous folder contents. I would back up the current VBox folder tree before I try messing with it.
