Racing cursor in Linux guest terminal window

Running 2.0.2, but I've been noticing this issue for a long time, at least 1.5.x. Everything works fine in Gentoo Linux guest under Windows XP host. But in a terminal window in Linux guest, the cursor will intermittently blink much faster. It's doing it now even when I'm working outside of Linux. This is more than a visual issue. If I'm typing in the terminal when this happens, it spews a bunch of characters for a single keypress. So if I type the letter "e" for example, I might end up with 6 "e"'s instead.
Has anyone else encountered this, and if so, managed to fix it? I have Guest Additions installed, using the VBox mouse driver and time synchronization.
Thanks.
