Windows server 2008 64bit problem

Post by lmarinov »

Hello,

I have a brand new poweredge 2950 III (Xeon 5430, 16GB RAM) with Windows server 2008 Standard 64bit installed. I`m experiencing some strange problems with VirtualBox. I`m using latest version - VirtualBox-2.0.2-36488-Win_amd64.msi.

I tried to set up a virtual machine with CentOS 5.2 64bit. When I enable Intel`s virtualization technology in BIOS, "Enable VT-x/AMD-V" checkbox in the virtual machine settings goes gray and it can not be enabled. When i try to install CentOS it tells me my cpu is not supporting 64bit OS. Then i disabled the virtualization in the BIOS, and I was able to click "Enable VT-x/AMD-V" checkbox. I`ve also enabled IO-APIC and PAE/NX (tried every combination of them also :). Everything seemed fine, but when i started the setup process of CentOS, it tells me again that my cpu is not supporting 64bit OS.

After that I successfuly installed the same CentOS using MS Hyper-V.

Can somebody enlighten me where is the problem?

LE:
After i disabled the virtualization from BIOS, I was able to enable the VT-x checkbox, but hyper-v stopped working because it needs the cpu virtualization enabled. So I did enable again virtualization from BIOS. Hyper-v started working again and I was able to enable/disable VT-x in VirtualBox too! But the problem with the CentOS remained. I also tried to install Windows server 2008 64bit in virtual machine, but at the time windows was finalizing the installation, the virtual machine stucked with the error "A critical error has occurred while running the virtual machine and the machine execution has stopped." Rebooted the virtual machine but after short loading I get the following windows error: "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation can not proceed"...
