How do I connect to internet on ubuntu Linux in VB on Vista?

Post by ljandrews »

Hi,

I am running Windows Vista as my main OS with VirtualBox installed. I have recently installed ubuntu Linux in VB, and all seems well but I would like to get connected to the internet when using my Linux. What would be the best way please?

The way I connect to the internet normally is via my Speedtouch ADSL modem. I don't have any routers etc.

Can I simply access the internet once my main host OS is connected some how, or will I have to disconnect and then try to connect inside Linux?

Thanks!

Yes, it's perfectly possible. You need to look at the Network subject in the manual. The easiest way to get working is to use NAT - in the Network tab under Settings for your VM, select NAT for the Attached To popup. NAT will allow you to access the Internet via your host from within the VM. If, however, you are doing something like running a server in your VM which needs to be seen over the local network, you'll need to look at another option such as bridging. NAT should get you started though.
