When I install VBox 5.2.44 (or any version) it copies some files, then says "Rolling back action" and shows this error:

I'm running Vista Ultimate SP2 x64 with all updates and the extended kernel.

Vista is not a supported host for VirtualBox 5.2.44.

Supported Windows hosts in that version were:
- Windows Server 2008 (64-bit)
– Windows Server 2008 R2 (64-bit)
– Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit)
– Windows 8 (32-bit and 64-bit)
– Windows 8.1 (32-bit and 64-bit)
– Windows 10 RTM build 10240 (32-bit and 64-bit)
– Windows Server 2012 (64-bit)
– Windows Server 2012 R2 (64-bit)
– Windows Server 2016 (64-bit)

Here's a way to find out what version might work:

Go into each major version family in https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Download_Old_Builds to find out what the ending version number is in each family (this is the final number in z.y.x, such as the 44 in the 5.2.x family). This will show the last minor version for each major family.

Then load up the PDF of the manual at https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/z.y.x/UserManual.pdf, replacing 'z.y.x' with the version you want to investigate.

My quick scan shows Vista was still supported in 5.2.0, but had disappeared by 5.2.20. Successive approximation should quickly pin down the last version supporting Vista.

FWIW Vista is going to be about as insecure as XP nowadays, and should stay off the internet.
