Stuck on Kali logo - no login screen appears

Post by Triple G »

Im getting a similar issue with Virtual box 6.1 on my windows 10 work laptop. Im still stuck on the kali logo upon starting kali Linux.

I installed kali-linux-2020.4-installer-amd64.iso for this virtual box. I tried the hyper v turnoff cmdlet on the above suggestions. Can anyone help?

Thank you! :D

When you think you should post in another topic that you think fits your problem, you should try what the topic says as a solution before posting.

Moved to a separate topic.

Hyper-V is enabled and needs to be disabled. See HMR3Init: Attempting fall back to NEM (Hyper-V is active).

Oops, you are absolutely correct! I didn't read carefully enough, really sorry about that.

Most folks successfully disable Hyper-V with the linked steps. Could you please describe exactly what you're trying?

To turn Hyper-V off completely, do this:

1. Shut down all programs. You will have to reboot your host.

3. Find the Command Prompt icon, right click it and choose Run As Administrator.

4. Enter this command:

bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off

Some report this command was needed also:

DISM /Online /Disable-Feature:Microsoft-Hyper-V

5. Enter this command:

shutdown -s -t 2

I've done these three steps, I'm realizing it might be because Im on a work laptop and their policies might stop me from turning it off, even though the commands successfully run

Have you checked that the Windows hypervisor is not loading? What does the setting for hypervisorlaunchtype now say if you do a bcdedit /enum command?

If the hypervisor does not load the other settings do not really matter. As long as the hypervisor does not load, the other settings should not interfere with VirtualBox. If the hypervisor is not loaded but you still have the problem, you have found a different cause of the problem.

When your vm now loads, does the bar below the window show a white V on a blue background, or a V on the back of a green turtle?

The BCD Store content looks ok to me. If you used the shutdown command exactly as instructed (and not the Windows Start Menu without the Shift key), the Windows Boot Loader entry was either circumvented or later overruled. The former could happen if there existed another hibernating or caching mechanism in your computer akin to Windows Fast Startup, perhaps in the BIOS.

This is a very distinct possibility. Hyper-V drives some security settings that IT might have imposed.

You might also break corporate policy, pink-slip-wise, if you change the laptop's settings. Might want to check with the boss on this. If you get permission, then IT can get Virtualbox running for you, or at least disable Hyper-V.
