Win 7 USB <no devices> when trying to add usb

Post by F95 »

I have struggled with this issue for 3 days now and I would like to report the the fix for the next person who may have this issue.

I am running windows 7 with 6.x virtualbox. and I lost all ability to add usb devices to any of my VM's. you would click the filter add button and it would just say <no devices>.

I tried everything possible.

so what happened to cause the failure: a new asmedia 3.1 extensible host controller usb driver was installed on the PC by another user and it was not the correct drivers for the chipset on the mobo.

the chipset i am running is z370 on a asus Hero maximus x. So the driver that was accidentally installed wiped out the usb ability in virtualbox.

also note it did not affect anything else on the PC all other types of usb usage and thumb drives etc... still worked so looking closely at the driver was overlooked at first.

I searched the intel web site for the drivers specific to the PC mobo chipset (3.0 extensible) and uninstalled the 3.1 extensible and all then usb capability came back in virtualbox and it worked normally.

I wanted to make this post for future reference so its easy for anyone who's had the same mix up with usb drivers. There's many many posts that lead you down rabbit holes trying to correct usb connectivity errors so hopefully this helps someone in the future
