Guest additions screen problems

I have been using a previous version of VirtualBox (can't remember the exact version number but it was maybe 1.6 or 1.7) on my Vista laptop, and decided to upgrade to the latest version.
I uninstalled the old version, and installed the new version - it seemed to detect the old settings and when it asked me what to do with the old settings I chose to SAVE them in the new format.
I was able to start and shutdown a virtual machine (which was Windows 2000 guest).
I then decided to check that the guest additions were up to date so I did Device->Install Guest Additions. It said I have an old version and offered to remove it and restart the machine - I said OK. When it restarted, the same Install Guest Additions menu did nothing at all, so I mounted the VBoxGuestAdditions.iso as a CDROM and installed them manually from the CD image within my Windows 2000 guest.
Now when I drag to resize the virtual machine's window client area the screws up as if the stride of the window is not correct, but when I release the mouse button the screen display correctly at the new size. It looks a bit messy but I could live with this.
However, when I try to shutdown the guest I get the "Windows is shutting down" message box, then the whole virtual machine window client area turns into alternating green and black vertical stripes, and I have to "Power off machine" to get the window to close.
I guess there is a problem with the display driver in the guest additions, but I never had these problems using the old version of VirtualBox.
Any ideas how to fix this problem?
