Error during HD selection

Post by CPeter »

Hi,

I have created an .VHDX file and want to use this file with Virtual Box as virtual machine (it from my old computer).

After the selection of the file I got the following error message:

Die Plattenabbilddatei W:\_Virtuelles Drive altes RAID\DESKTOP-3DMUG9T.VHDX konnte nicht geöffnet werden.

Could not open the medium 'W:\_Virtuelles Drive altes RAID\DESKTOP-3DMUG9T.VHDX'.

VD: error VERR_NOT_SUPPORTED opening image file 'W:\_Virtuelles Drive altes RAID\DESKTOP-3DMUG9T.VHDX' (VERR_NOT_SUPPORTED).

Fehlercode: E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Komponente: MediumWrap
Interface: IMedium {ad47ad09-787b-44ab-b343-a082a3f2dfb1}
Callee: IVirtualBox {d0a0163f-e254-4e5b-a1f2-011cf991c38d}
Callee RC: VBOX_E_OBJECT_NOT_FOUND (0x80BB0001)

The file is okay, because if I double click the file the drive will be mounted in Exlorer. I also want to use it as virtual machine.

Is there any help?

Best regards, Carsten

As the message says, VHDX files are not supported in VirtualBox.

See user manual, section 5.2: Disk Image Files (VDI, VMDK, VHD, HDD).

You can convert the VHDX to VDI using CloneVDI. VBoxManage would also work, but perhaps is not as "new user " friendly.

Hopefully you have at least imaged the entire PC drive, since partition images will not be usable regardless of container format.

Hi,

I have imaged to total harddrive with all partitions.

at first I need to create some free hd space to convert the image.

Is this a problem if the imaged System is a INTEL processor and my current PC have an AMD processor?

Also it is a RAID Drive - are there any things to respect.

The change will be visible to the guest OS, but whether or not the guest OS will care I can't tell you. You have not said what the guest OS is, nor have you said if this is a system drive or data drive. If it's a RAID drive then I expect the system is not booting from it.

I have never tried to image a RAID drive (set). I imagine it would depend very much on the details of the on-disk structures and how you went about imaging it, and what your guest software expects. VirtualBox makes no special accomodation for RAID, it emulates drives at the hardware level, not controllers at the RAID level.

You are trying a Physical-to-Virtual or P2V. It's been done many times. Web-search "P2V {your physical PC's OS} site:forums.virtualbox.org"

There should be enough info in Mpack's comments above to fix any common pebkac errors in doing a P2V (image all partitions, use compatible formats etc.) For Windows PCs, Disk2VHD from Microsoft is a good place to start.

I do not see a problem imaging a RAID drive if it appears in Disk Management as a single "drive".
