Win10 VM extremely slow after installation of Guest Additions

Hello support team,

Following some basic information about the Virtualbox with Host and Guest that I'm running. You can find all other information's in the attached log file.
  • Host: Ubuntu 18.04
    Guest: Windows 10 Pro
    Virtualbox .6.1.16 with Extension Pack
    Guest Additions 6.1.16
After installing Windows 10 it works fine (open/close windows without delay, typed text appears without delay), however, after installation of the guest additions Windows becomes extremely slow. For instance: I type "performance" into the search box next to the Windows icon in the lower left corner ("Type here to search") and there is a 10-15 seconds delay until I actually see the word "performance" appear. Another strange thing is that the window that appears after clicking the Windows icon has turned opaque and is barely readable. It looked normal before I installed the Guest Additions.

I had this problem yesterday and played with the Virtualbox System and Display settings. Nothing helped so eventually I removed the VM and created a new Win10 VM today. Same thing happened again: Worked fine until I installed the Guest Additions.

I searched the board and the following thread looks very similar. It got solved with an update of Virtualbox. Since I'm new I can't post URLs so I give you the name of the topic:

[Fixed] Guest additions causes Linux VM to slow to a crawl posted by chrisdown68 in June 2018

Attached is a log file that I created from a fresh VM start, experiencing the problem with delayed text and opaque windows and finally shutting down Win10. I hope it helps you to help me. :)

Best regards,
Tobias

If the old thread is from 2018 then there's no need to cite it, it would be irrelevant after two years even if it was grounded in facts at the time.

I don't see a mystery here: you're running Win10 64bit on one core and only 2048MB RAM. I would double both of those. Maybe double graphics RAM too. Note however that your host is not ideal for running two 64bit VMs. It would be better if the host had 4 cores (instead of two as at present) and 16GB RAM (instead of 8GB).

And you need to actually install the Guest Additions. At the moment I think you only mounted the CD in the virtual CD drive.

Also note that it's normal for a new Win10 install to hog a lot of CPU as it searches for updates and indexes the hard drive. Try making the changes I suggested and leave it running overnight. In the past I have disable disk indexing, but I'm not sure I would recommend that.

Hi mpack,

A very Merry Christmas to you and thank you very much for your prompt reply.

Following my feedback to your comments:

Guest Additions are installed, the attached image shows it installed under Apps and running under the tray icons, too. I did not find Guest Additions in the Virtualbox log file that I attached to my previous post, though. Does that mean something went wrong with the installation? Could be a possible reason for my issues. What do you think?

I'm aware that my system is borderline, however, I'm running Win10 with the default settings. I did change to 2 cores, double ram and increased graphic ram on my first install but that didn't improve the situation. I then decided to create a new (fresh) VM again with default settings. The point I was trying to make in my previous post is that Win10 ran performance-wise OK before I installed the Guest Additions. No lag for text, no strange graphic such as the opaque Start window.

The reason why I referred to the 2018 post was that it summarizes exactly the same problem which got solved with an update, I was hoping there maybe some lessons learnt from back then.

To improve performance I will now turn off a few of the things that make Windows look fancy plus I will leave it running and see what happens. I will let you know if things improve.

Best regards,
Tobias
