VirtualBox crashes during resume from suspend or optical disc change

I consistently have running VMs crash whenever I take a snapshot or changed the disc in the virtual optical drive -- including when I select "Insert Guest Additions CD Image" from the menu. The VirtualBox Manager window survives the problem -- only the VM window disappears when it crashes. The VM status changes to "aborted" in the Manager window. I am running VirutalBox 6.1.10 on Ubuntu 20.04, though I had the same error on multiple previous version of Ubuntu and VirtualBox.
The last lines in the VBox.log are:
I have also seen it crash without the last 2 lines in the log -- it simply says it's going from SUSPENDED to RESUMING and nothing else.
