windows 20H2 slow with 3d acceleration enabled

Post by Ajuricaba »

Host
Virtualbox 6.1.16
Windows 10 Pro 20H2 19042.685
AMD Ryzen 7 2700X Eight-Core Processor
RAM 16,0 GB
Motherboard B450 Tomahawk
MSI Armor RX570
Enabled AMD-V on Motherboard
device manager shows 16 processors

Guest = Host
Windows 10 Pro 20H2 19042.685
CPU 2
RAM 4096MB

Problem

Windows is extremely slow, with a delay of 1 minute or more for the screens to open.

To get around, I need to turn off 3D acceleration.

Is there any way to configure to support 3D acceleration or will it be supported in the next versions of virtualbox?

Start the VM from full normal shutdown, not save-state. Run until you see the problem happen, then shut down the VM from within the VM's OS if possible. If not possible, close the Virtualbox window for the VM with the Power Off option set.

Right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, choose Show Log. Save the far left tab's log, zip it, and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

The only thing I see in the log that's wrong is the CPU count, related to your other topic viewtopic.php?f=6&t=101021, which I think you should address first, as it might clear up this one.

I updated the graphics driver from the link
https://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics ... eon-rx-570

for

Radeon Software
Adrenalin 2020 Edition 20.11.2 Recommended (WHQL)
Release Date 11/18/2020

I also updated the following motherboard driver from the link

https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support ... Win10%2064

AMD Chipset Driver
Version 2.10.26.336
Release Date 2020-12-11

For now, these updates have not resolved this issue.

It seems to me that I read on the forum before posting that more people reported the problem of delay with 3D acceleration. Disabling works with good performance, but the goal is to report to give you feedback.

mpack wrote:Regarding the slowness, now that you have a working CPU make sure that Windows hasn't turned on Hyper-v, as that is nearly always the reason for very slow VirtualBox VMs.
All Hyper-V check boxes are disabled.

WHPX disabled.
Virtual Machine Platform disabled.
WSL disabled.

Today, I noticed that the problem only occurs after installing the Guest Additions. In an instance without Guest Additions, I can leave 3D acceleration enabled.

Post a new log showing another full run of a slow VM, please.

I realized that after opening some window, for example, in settings >> system and changing from about to display, to sound, to storage ... the windows are displayed if I maximize and restore each time I change from window

Looks like this one dropped off my radar. Is your Windows 10 VM running OK now?
