Virtualbox 6.1.16 USB passthrough problem (failed to attach)

Post by f1sz »

Hello,
I'm having problem with USB passthrough on currently newest available Virtualbox (6.1.16).
When I want to capture a device - it says Failed to attach the USB device <name> to the virtual machine (error E_INVALIDARG 0x700800057).

Host: Windows 10 2004
Guest: Windows 10 1904 (guest additions installed).
Virtualbox: 6.1.16 with Extension pack 6.1.16r140961

Hyper-V function is NOT enabled on the host. I had wireshark installed, but I've removed it.

Tried to capture device "manually", and via filter (if via filter - device is not appearing on the Guest OS, if manually I've always receive Failed to attach message). Both host and guest were rebooted. I've also tried with changing USB Controller version (all of them: 1.1, 2.0 and 3.0) on the VM USB Settings. Device of course connected BEFORE guest OS start.

The same issue is happening with other guest OS (based on Windows XP), some time ago - with older (probably) Virtualbox 5.x it worked flawlessly!

Some more details below:

Asked and answered too many times before, and nor is this new to 6.1.16.

See USB Basics and Troubleshooting. Concentrate on the stuff about creating filters and when to plug the device in.

I already read it. Still NOT working.

I have filter set (If you have seen the logfile or not), ran VM then plugged the device AFTER guest OS start ... and surprise, nothing. As said earlier this is not the only VM, that I have problem with passthrough.

You might have skimmed just a hint too fast there, try it again.

I'm gonna go with 'not', seeing as there isn't one posted. Neither is there a 'vboxmanage list usbhost'. See step 8 in the tutorial, go through it carefully again.

If you want help you must follow directions.

Wireshark has a USB filter, and I seem to remember it might interfere with Virtualbox, though don't quote me. Be sure all of Wireshark is gone.

Hi,

I have tried all possibilities with win hyper-v and without, set cli vbox nested virt. on my virtualmachine etc, but at least I came my mind, that perhaps nested vt-x in Intel is not supported my computer! (All another virtualization was set on on bios.)

To be sure, I found an utillity program from Intel: "Intel(R) Processor Identification Utility". It checks what your intel processor is supporting. also nested vt-x !! Conclusion: my comp. does not support it, even it is very new and fast.

@tkassila: how does your post relate to the OPs USB passthrough question?
