Where is Guest Additions v6.1.97 and v6.1.5?

Post by balcerman »

Hello,

Where can I get Guest Additions in version 6.1.97 or 6.1.5?

Why do I need it? Because I have an issue with copy-paste feature. I cannot copy the plain text between my Windows 7 host and Linux CentOS guest.
I have found the issue resolved under VirtualBox ticket 19336 virtualbox org ticket 19336), but the solution is included into VBoxGuestAdditions_6.1.5-136327.iso and VBoxGuestAdditions_6.1.97-136310.iso, and I cannot find any of them.

I have tried the links from the ticket but they won't work.
I also browsed folder on "download virtualbox org" but there are no such versions....

Version 6.1.5 was a test version which was deleted when 6.1.6 was released. If the final number of a version is odd (6.1.5) then it is a test version. All test versions get deleted when the next even number official release (6.1.6) is posted.

Version 6.1.97 is a development build found under test builds. The actual build number may not be available anymore.

Lest we chase an "XY problem", could you please tell us what the problem is you are having, in your own words?

scottgus1, thanks for your help!

Indeed, it's an XY problem to me :) Of course I don't care about these particular versions, the core problem is that copy/paste feature beteween host and guest doesn't work in both directions.
Few infos about my configuration:

Windows version: 7 (host)

Linux version (guest):
$ cat /etc/redhat-release
CentOS Linux release 7.2.1511 (Core)

Oracle VM VirtualBox version:
5.2.6 r120293 (Qt5.6.2)

Guest Additions version:
6.0.14 --at first
6.1.16 r140961 --then I tries this one
6.1.2 --and this one but failed in all cases

Do you have any idea why it does not work, and what can I do fix it?

Are your VMs text console only or are they desktop/gui? Text console/command-line-only has no clipboard, so no clipboard sharing.

As a test, ty a standard Ubuntu desktop GUI VM, install the Guest Additions, see if the shared clipboard works then.

I already have GUI on my CentOS, and copy/paste doesn't work for it.
Some additional info about GUI:

Code: Select all

$ plasma-desktop --version
Qt: 4.8.5
KDE Development Platform: 4.14.8
Plasma Desktop Shell: 4.11.19

One thing I just noticed:
balcerman wrote:Oracle VM VirtualBox version:

6.1.2 --and this one but failed in all cases
A host program can't be expected to work with client plug-ins that did not exist when the host program was built.

Please uninstall and clear out the Guest Additions from CentOS, then reboot, and install 5.2.6's GAs that came bundled with 5.2.6.Try the shared clipboard. If it works, then you're all set.

If shared clipboard does not work, please uninstall the GAs and Virtualbox (you might want to take a host disk backup image before this) and install 6.1.16 Virtualbox and GAs, and try shared clipboard again.

If shared clipboard still does not work, right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, choose Show Log. Save the far left tab's log, zip it, and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

Hello again,

Sorry for not replying such a long time - I had some covid adventures.
But now I'm back. I tried the combinations you (@scottgus1) suggested, but the result is negative.

Currently I have the following configuration:

Code: Select all

Windows version: 7 (host)

[root@telejur-63 /root]# plasma-desktop --version
Qt: 4.8.5
KDE Development Platform: 4.14.8
Plasma Desktop Shell: 4.11.19

Linux version (guest):
$ cat /etc/redhat-release
CentOS Linux release 7.2.1511 (Core)

Oracle VM VirtualBox version:
6.1.16 r140961 (Qt5.6.2)

Guest Additions version:
$ ls /opt | grep GuestAdditions
VBoxGuestAdditions-6.0.16
$ lsmod | grep -io vboxguest | xargs modinfo | grep -iw version
version:        6.1.16 r140961
In the attachment you'll find the log file you asked.

Thanks for the log. There are a few problems:
00:00:03.947979 VirtualBox VM 6.1.16 r140961 win.amd64 (Oct 16 2020 16:33:17) release log
Host OS:
00:00:03.947988 OS Product: Windows 7
Since we last talked I found out that 6.1.x no longer supports Windows 7 as a host OS: https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch01. ... tossupport. Windows 7 may work, but glitches can be expected to appear. Whether this is one of the glitches...
00:00:04.024743 Executable: D:\Applications\VirtualBox\VirtualBoxVM.exe
Virtualbox was installed outside of the default and expected C:\Program Files. Glitches have happened because of this.
Host CPU status:
00:00:06.857961 CPUM: Logical host processors: 8 present, 8 max, 8 online, online mask: 00000000000000ff
00:00:06.857963 CPUM: Physical host cores: 4
Guest CPU settings:
00:00:04.386039 NumCPUs <integer> = 0x0000000000000004 (4)
All four physical host cores are set for availability in the VM. Host instability can result if the VM goes 105% on the reactor.
00:16:07.990288 Path <string> = "D:\Aktualne\0027140 Environment Issues\VBoxGuestAdditions_6.1.16.iso" (cb=69)
Apparently you're using a downloaded GAs instead of the bundled ones.

I don't see the "starting shared clipboard service" message in the VM log after the Guest Additions load up. but I'm not sure if that shows in a Linux VM. In a working Windows VM it shows:
00:00:30.242831 VMMDev: Guest Log: Starting service 'clipboard' ...
00:00:30.246420 VMMDev: Guest Log: Service 'clipboard' started
We'll need a Linux guru on this one.

You don't get these messages in a Linux guest, so that's ok for now. What's not ok IMHO, is the combination of VirtualBox 6.1.16, the old VBoxVGA Graphics Controller and the VirtualBox GA 6.0.14. ;)

That old video card is interesting, probably from running pre-6 Virtualbox when the VM was made.

I don't know if any of these problems could cause failed shared clipboard. Try a brand-new VM with fresh Guest Additions and see if shared clipboard works in the new VM.

This is the only log message you'll typically see while booting a Linux guest, before using copy&paste.

@balcerman:
Some bugfixes were made in VirtualBox 6.1.18 regarding the Shared Clipboard, so I'd suggest to use that version. If the problem is still reproducible, please describe what you are trying to copy and paste, including the source and destination applications.

I've managed to do what you suggested.

I uninstalled Guest Additions 6.1.16.
Then I downloaded VirtualBox-6.1.18-142142-Win.exe.
Next I uninstalled my VirtualBox 6.1.16, and installed 6.1.18 using the downloaded file.
Now it is installed in a default location, so one of the suspects of @scottgus1 is down.
Then I installed Guest Additions 6.1.18 using the iso bundled with VirtualBox installation, so the second suspect of @scottgus1 is down as well.

My configuration is now as follows:

Code: Select all

Windows version: 7 (host)

[root@telejur-63 /root]# plasma-desktop --version
Qt: 4.8.5
KDE Development Platform: 4.14.8
Plasma Desktop Shell: 4.11.19

Linux version (guest):
$ cat /etc/redhat-release
CentOS Linux release 7.2.1511 (Core)

Oracle VM VirtualBox version:
6.1.18 r142142 (Qt5.6.2)

Guest Additions version:
$ ls /opt | grep GuestAdditions
VBoxGuestAdditions-6.1.18
$ lsmod | grep -io vboxguest | xargs modinfo | grep -iw version
version:        6.1.18 r142142
After rebooting not only copy-paste still does not work, but also screen resize stopped working as well...
I attached the VBox.log.

I noticed one more issue. Every time when I try to reboot my Linux, I receive the application error message. That didn't happen with the previous VirtualBox version.
It does not occur when I first shutdown the machine, and then start is separately.
The screen is attached.

Thanks, balcerman, for trying the changes!

Seems you are getting hit by a known problem with the host PC Nvidia drivers vs Virtualbox hardening. (This problem may have been there in 5.2.44 but just not logged, I'm not sure.) The jury is still out on whether the problem is in hardening or Nvidia's security certificates:
00:00:05.669942 supR3HardenedErrorV: supR3HardenedScreenImage/LdrLoadDll: rc=VERR_CR_PKCS7_KEY_USAGE_MISMATCH fImage=1 fProtect=0x0 fAccess=0x0 \Device\HarddiskVolume2\Windows\System32\
nvd3dumx.dll
It could be possible that an update of host PC Nvidia drivers might help, or turning off 3D acceleration in the VM's Display settings. The first may and the second ought to get your VM going. Once it is up and running, we can look in the log for fth0's telltale line "Shared Clipboard: New Clipboard API enabled".

Also try a fresh new VM with the same OS and GAs, see if that one works.
