I increased the disk size in Virtual Media Manager from 10GB to 12GB. but now the Ubuntu doesn't boot up. It hangs when it comes to black screen with white underscore. I tried increasing RAM and video memory, but it didn't help.

Start the VM from full normal shutdown, not save-state. Run until you see the problem happen, then shut down the VM from within the VM's OS if possible. If not possible, close the Virtualbox window for the VM with the Power Off option set.

Right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, choose Show Log. Save the far left tab's log, zip it, and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

Also, What caused you to want to increase the disk size? Did Ubuntu report that it was out of disk space?

Yes the system was notifying me that disk space is low.

I would at least like to restore some data I had on the machine if that's possible.

Alright I recovered files that I needed by simply opening .vdi file with 7zip. I might as well create a new disk that is bigger.

This may not be the only problem, but you were over-committing RAM. This problem would be unrelated to enlarging the disk size.

You say that Ubuntu doesn't start up, but the log provided says otherwise: it shows the guest getting as far as loading the Guest Additions, which means boot was virtually completed.

That part is easy to explain:

Ubuntu has started up to the point where the next display resolution change would occur to display the graphical login screen, which increases current memory usage. Since Ubuntu shows a black screen (with a blinking cursor) before that, it's not obvious for the common user if it is running or hanging. Of course, one could look at the status line ...

A quick google "ubuntu ran out of disk space now wont log in" shows this happens on physical computers too. Solve as if it happened on a real PC using Ubuntu's help channels and web-searches, and ignore that the "hardware" was provided by Virtualbox.
