PROGRESS! I renamed the adapter with a double space and the VM ran. It gets to the Home Assistant login. However, I still can not connect to Home Assistant through a browser using addresses like 192.168.55.1:8123. I notice that DHCP is turned off in the VM adapter. Is there anything else that I can send you. There is something called "snapshot" but not sure what that does or if it might help.

That is a good start. You now have normal networking problems, not VirtualBox problems.
Even if DHCP was working, you would not be able to access the vm using an IP address of 192.168.55.1 . Where did that come from?
When you use bridged mode, the vm behaves as if it was another PC on your LAN. If the host gets a 192.168.3.x IP from DHCP, so will the guest.
You can use whatever IP address you like for the vm, but if you want to see it from the host, they need to be in the same IP subnet as well as the same network.
Have you seen this guide to installing Home Assistant using VirtualBox?

Finally, SUCCESS. You two have been a great help. Realizing that there was an extra space in the name of the adapter was a stroke of genius worthy of Sherlock Homes. The final piece was Bill's pointer to that particular HA tutorial. It said to use the VDI file where the other tutorial I had followed used the VMDK file. Set up a new VM with the VDI and all runs just fine. I can now control the 4 windows that I motorized (which are in a hard to get to location) remotely and have them shut automatically when it starts to rain. Thanks again for sticking with me through the process

Thanks for reporting back. Regarding the question how the second space character got lost in the beginning:
What happened when you created the new VM? Did you have to manually edit the network adapter name again? If not, do you have any idea what could have been different this time?

HI,
When I recreated the VM I still had to manually add the extra space. No idea why but at least I am now able to run it. Again, thanks for your interest and most valuable help.
