There's no way apps like that should be suffering with GBs of RAM available. Check that you aren't talking about disk space instead of RAM.
If you were running 3D CAD and had an entire 3D skyscraper modelled in there then I could understand it.

FWIW, Java-based IDEs can be RAM-hungry, too: I'm using Eclipse for C++ development of a large project (> 50k files), which makes extensive use of C++ templates, and the Eclipse Indexer only runs satisfactorily if the Java machine has 8 GB or more. I'll agree that it shouldn't need it, since the Indexer database (on disk) is "only" about 500 MB, but that's the difference between theory and practice.
