(Resolved) Hardware Virtualization

Post by Zosimus »

Running VirtualBox Version 6.1.16 r140961 on HP Windows 10 device (first time trying) I cannot launch the Windows 98 virtual OS because "The hardware virtualization is enabled in the Acceleration section of the System page although it is not supported by the host system. It should be disabled in order to start the virtual system."

Unfortunately, I cannot figure out how to disable it. I have gone to the System:Acceleration section where I find the options:

Paravirtualization Interface: Default
Hardware Virtualization: Enable Nested Paging.

I have toggled Enable Nested Paging on and off, and switched the Paravirtualization Interface alternatively to None, Default, Legacy, etc. Regardless of what changes I make, the OK button will not light up and my only choice is to click cancel. I have also attempted to enter the BIOS on the start-up to see whether hardware virtualization can be enabled, but it cannot. I have also deleted the OS and attempted to re-create it using Expert mode, but I am not given any choice to disable the Acceleration.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Downgraded to Version 5.1.38 r122592 (Qt5.6.2)

Problem resolved.

That error happens because either your computer's "virtualization technology" (VT-x / AMD-V / SVM) is not on in the BIOS or Hyper-V is active. Go through everything in:

I have a 64bit host, but can't install 64bit guests

6.1.x requires "virtualization technology" enabled regardless of guest OS or CPU count. 6.0.x and earlier allows "virtualization technology" to be off.

How did you settle on 5.1.38?

I've already been into the BIOS, and I do see the acceleration option, but it's grayed out and cannot be activated for some reason.

I tried v. 4, but it didn't work for me. So, I uninstalled everything and tried the latest version of 5. So far, it's working fine.

Some older laptops' manufacturers didn't allow VT in their BIOSes. A BIOS update might allow enabling the switch.
