Setting up Srial ports

[GRS]

I can not get the serial port to work.

Host Fedora 7
Guest XP Sp2

I can use a modem connected to /dev/ttyS0 when using the host so I know the serial port under linux works.

I can see COM1 IRQ 4 0x3F8 set up in XP using the device manager and XP reports that the COM1 is working.

If I open Virtualbox and click settings then Serial
I can set
COM1
Address 0x3F8
IRQ 4

Select host device
Enter /dev/ttyS0

Then OK.

When I start XP iI get the floowing message

Serial device 0 cannot attcch to CHAR Driver
VBox Status code:-38(VERR_ACCESS_DENIED)
Result code 0x80004005
Component Consile
Interfacce 1 console {1dea5c4b-0753-4193-b909-22330f64ec45}

If I then click OK XP does not start and I am taken back to the start screen of Virtual box.


I have tried to set it up using VBoxManage modifyvm but I get a long error message and have not had any luck in getting part this.

Can any one assist with telling me what I am doing wrong or have not done.

Just out of curiosity, what are the permission on /dev/ttyS0? On my Ubuntu system, I see this:

crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 4, 64 2008-09-07 14:23 /dev/ttyS0

...in which case normal users not a member of dialout cannot access it.

The other thing that might give more details is the log for the virtual machine. If you are using the VirtualBox GUI, click on Machine -> Show Log... (CTRL+L) to get additional information.

I have in the Vboxusers group uucp included.

This log was taken with the Serial set up as shown in my first post. XP started and then crashed with the error message as per my first post.

I look forward to any advice any one can assist with to get the serial port going. I need to drive a modem from XP for a piece of software I have to use and the maker will NOT provide a linux version.

I have in the Vboxusers group uucp included.

That doesn't sound right. I'm not certain what that means -- unless you mean that you have a uucp user, and you made that user a member of Vboxusers.

A group cannot contain another group. But a user can be a member of a group. What this means is _you_ have to be a member of uucp, or you have to change the user and/or group permission for /dev/ttyS0.

Did you notice the error at the end of the log file?

And what does the uucp group have? That is the important one!

If you login as Admin and /dev/ttyS0 is owned by root:uucp, you need to be part of the uucp group to have access. Adding the uucp user to the Admin group and Vboxusers group will get you nowhere, since you don't login as uucp.

Thanks for the help. I have added myself to the uucp group and now XP can access the serial port /dev/ttyS0.

I installed the modem in Xp and ran the daignostics and got a OK.
In hyperterminal I can run the AT commands and get results. I can also take the modem off and on hook using the AT commands. On this basis I have assumed the XP serial port via /dev/ttyS0 is ok.

However I can not dial out from hyperterminal via the modem when hyperterminal is set up for a modem.

I am going to get another communiations prog and install it on Xp and see if that will dial the number I want.
