guest hangs when loading CD-ROM drivers

When using VirtualBox 2.0.2 on Debian Linux host or Windows XP Pro host I am unable to install any operating system as they all hang the system when they load the CD-ROM drivers.
This happens with PC DOS 7, OS/2 Warp 4, Windows 98, OpenSUSE 10.1 and every other guest operating system I've tried.
All the guest OS have been used right out of the box, so there are no 3rd party drivers installed yet.
What CD-ROM drivers should I use? I can always make modified boot floppies.
