Unable to run Kali VMDK

Hi,

I'm trying to run a VMDK running Kali 2020.3 64bit on vitrubox on win 10. The initial boot screens (with options "Kali GNU/Linux" and "Advanced options for Kali GNU/Linux") is displayed, but then I just get a black screen with blinking cursor.

The last few lines of the log file are:

Code: Select all

00:00:10.703286 VMMDev: Guest Log: BIOS: Booting from Hard Disk...
00:00:11.409891 Display::i_handleDisplayResize: uScreenId=0 pvVRAM=000000000ca40000 w=640 h=480 bpp=32 cbLine=0xA00 flags=0x0 origin=0,0
00:03:51.996994 Display::i_handleDisplayResize: uScreenId=0 pvVRAM=0000000000000000 w=720 h=400 bpp=0 cbLine=0x0 flags=0x0 origin=0,0
There are no errors in the log.

I wondered if the post "I have a 64bit host, but can't install 64bit guests" might explain the issue, but I've run all the suggested checks on the cpu, BIOS, hyper-v and other software and can't find anything.

The VMDK runs fine in vmware player.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Perhaps if you let experts look at the log then they could help. Zip it and attach the zip here.

p.s. You can't "run a VMDK". A VMDK is just a disk drive, not a complete PC. I hope this doesn't imply that you took this drive out of the original VM, because that would lead to the same problems as taking the drive out of a laptop: i.e. hopefully you can find an identical laptop to put it in.

Thanks mpack. Point taken re. the VMDK - thanks.

Is there a recommended way to obfuscate/remove sensitive info from log files before uploading?

The only piece of sensitive information that might show up in a log, and that only if your PC is directly attached to the internet, not through a network router, could be your public IP address.

There is absolutely nothing else in the log that can open you to trouble for posting. Changed logs cannot be trusted to reflect the exact situation the guest is having. Do not change anything in the log, or you might change something that prevents us from seeing the problem. Only if your public IP address appears may you change that one item, please.

I would say change nothing. I don't see how knowing someone's public IP address (which I could get anyway by packet sniffing) is of any concern.
