VB6.1, Win 10 host, cannot install Win 7 guest

Post by DJehan »

Hi all

I am trying to get a VM set up for a Windows 7 pro guest, but not having any success in getting it to boot to install the guest OS.

I have created a guest VM, 4GB RAM, everything else as standard.
I seem to have an isue in creating a bootable ISO from my Windows 7 install USB stick, so I found a tutorial to create a VMDK disk, pointing to the USB stick. This was originally on the same physical disk as the VDI, although a different folder.

The result is that I got to the 'Windows is starting' logo and then it just hangs and eventually BSODs with STOP 0x1E. After some more digging, I found a suggestion that having the 2 disks on the same physical host disk might be the issue, so I created a new one on a different disk - same issue.

Looking at the log file, there are multiple lines of VERR_ACCESS_DENIED errors, but I can't figure out why - I am running VB in Admin mode...

I do have Hyper-V enabled.

I have attached the log file, and the VMDK - so any ideas or suggestions would save what little hair I have left...

Thanks!
Darren

First, Hyper-V is enabled. See HMR3Init: Attempting fall back to NEM (Hyper-V is active).

Second, the USB as VMDK thing is "Raw Disk Access". To do Raw Disk Access on a Windows host you need to do two things:
1. Offline the disk in Windows Disk Management.
2. Run everything related to Virtualbox As Administrator: my experience viewtopic.php?f=6&t=93478.

Note that after you get the OS installed and no longer need the USB stick you should not run the guest as Administrator. Running Virtualbox as Admin opens a lot more channels for malware to access the PC. All the Access Denied's you are getting mean you aren't running as Admin yet.

Frame challenge: chuck the USB stick and get an install DVD for windows 7, it's a lot easier. They're cheap on Ebay. Scan the DVD into an ISO with ImgBurn when you get it, then boot the guest from the ISO. Install will be lickety-split.
