Confused by amd64 specification while installing on Intel machine

Post by sabuncu »

VirtualBox newbie here. I am installing VirtualBox-6.1.16-140961-Win.exe on an Intel laptop. During installation, at the step after selection of options is complete, I am prompted by Windows as follows:

Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?
Oracle VM VirtualBox 6.1.16140961 (amd64)

Why is there an amd64 specification in the package name?

Is this the correct package I should be installing on an Intel machine, or does it not matter?

Thank you.

All modern desktop/laptop 64bit CPUs use AMD64 instructions, including Intel CPUs. Intel's own 64bit architecture failed in the market.
