upgrade 4.3.4->5.2.44 32-bit vm crash on startup

Post by sdjonny »

hello,

I've been running a vm of windows xp (32-bit) on virtualbox 4.3.4, decided to upgrade virtualbox.
Read that version 6 doesn't support 32-bit VMs but version 5 does, so upgraded to latest 5.2.44

When I start the windows xp vm it shows the xp startup screen then shows a virtualbox guru meditation that a critical error has occurred while running the vm and the machine execution has been stopped and that I should upload the log and png here so here they are attached as logAndPng.zip.
I have been able to revert to 4.3.4 ok and the VM still runs on there just fine.
Thanks for your help.

VirtualBox 6 no longer supports 32bit HOSTS. I have plenty of 32bit VMs working just fine under v6.

Showing me a log and screenshot from a working 4.3.40 VM (with 4.0.8 GAs) is not helping me at all to diagnose problems with later VirtualBox versions. Especially since the log is truncated - you must close VirtualBox down before copying files it had open for writing.

My XP VMs are as old as yours and work just fine in the latest VirtualBox. One thing that has been lost is that 3D acceleration is no longer supported for pre-Win7 guests. With your truncated log I can't tell if that would matter to you.

Thanks for your expertise and explanations, much appreciated. My apologies for mistakenly uploading the wrong files and for taking so long to reply. I will try and reproduce the issue and upload correct files once I deal with some other urgent issues that have consumed my time. Thanks again.
