VDI shows zero KB

Post by anilkumarkatta »

Hi Friends,

I have created a VM with 6 VDIs attaached to it, and there was a windows update 1909 and during that time my VM was on, after completeion of the update, except OMV, OMV_2 all other VDIs are now showing as zero KBs

OMV
OMV_1
OMV_2
OMV_3
OMV_4
OMV_5

When reattach them and try to run getting following error:

Could not get the storage format of the medium 'D:\forAnil\VirtualBox VMs\OMV\ATMS\OMV\OMV_1.vdi' (VERR_NOT_SUPPORTED).

Result Code: VBOX_E_IPRT_ERROR (0x80BB0005)
Component: MediumWrap
Interface: IMedium {ad47ad09-787b-44ab-b343-a082a3f2dfb1}
Callee: IVirtualBox {d0a0163f-e254-4e5b-a1f2-011cf991c38d}
Callee RC: VBOX_E_OBJECT_NOT_FOUND (0x80BB0001)

i tried few options like creating a new test.vdi and copy it's first 72 byte data to the non workign vdi using some tools but did not work.

VERR_NOT_SUPPORTED means the file is not recognizable as a valid disk file. If the VDI files are all 0 bytes then they are dead. You'll have to bring back copies from your backups.

What is the snippet of log supposed to show?

Allowing the host OS to reboot while the guest is running can damage the guest.

Hi @Scottgus1,

I think there were couple of reboots performed during the windows 1909 update might have caused the damange.

Is there any way that we can recover these VDIs?

you mentioned that "You'll have to brink back copies from your backups" - is there any backups already captured by Oracle VM box? i didn't took any physical backup :-(

Don't try to pass the buck. :) If VirtualBox made the file then it would be a VirtualBox file, not your backup.

And no, there is no way to go from 0 bytes to all data magically restored, except by aforesaid backup.

I have never seen any Windows restart reduce files to 0 bytes. It takes work to rewrite a directory entry, it doesn't happen spontaneously.

Thanks for the reply @mpack

Oh GOD,
I lost all my data in them.

As you can sense why i created different VDIs are to have a RAID5 configuration in my Virutal Environment with Open Vault Media.

quick question, as it's a RAID5 system with 5 disks in it and 4 of them broke, do you think if I can restore the data from one good media which is OMV_2 ? { I know it a wrong forum to ask but curious to know. }

RAID5 can continue operating from one lost drive, regardless of how many drives are in the RAID5. You have 4 lost drives of 5. I'd wager that data ain't coming back.

Also, RAID6 can handle 2 lost drives, "RAID7" or ZFS can handle three lost drives. None of the RAIDs can handle lost data (such as something gets corrupted or deleted).

The R in RAID means Redundant, not Reliable or Restorable. You still need backups when in RAID. In fact, Backups are as ubiquitous as internet and electricity.

I think "Oh GOD, I lost all my data in them" is an accurate assessment of your situation, unfortunately.

'Tis a hard lesson to learn, but you can profit from it by starting a good backup routine.

thanks scott.

ITs really a BIG lesson to learn and there is no use of taking a backup setup for a backup server.. as I lost a huge life time data (pictures) and other stuff..

I feel really sorry for your loss, anilkumarkatta. Losing important things like photos can be devastating.

I have some 5 TB of data I would be really upset to lose. I really feel for you...

One thing that might work, though, if you have the money and the data is important enough, and the physical disks are still available, is to hire a data recovery service to work on the drives.
