No sound on Windows XP
No sound on Windows XP
Just installed and updated Windows XP from oem on my MacBook 2gig ram 2.4mhz. It seems to be operating but I can't hear anything on the Windows tour for example.
Have you done a search in the forum with the keywords "xp sound"?
Have you installed the guestadditions (short:ga's)?
What sounddevice is listed in windows devicemanager?
What soundconfiguration have you choosed in the virtualbox vm-properties?
I'm using windows2000 (short:w2k), my virtualbox vm-properties are CORE audio and ICH AC97, and before installing the ga's you will have to deinstall any other sounddevice listed as installed in device-manager, reboot, and then install the ga's.
May the groove be with you ...

The menuitem "install guest additions" only mounts the cd-image with the ga's.
The guestadditions are mounted at the first free deviceletter, usually d:. If you open d: in explorer, the ga's install will start. If not, have a look for the setup-executable in the root-folder of drive d: (or e: if you have setup 2 virtual-hd's). A doubleclick onto the executable will start the install of the ga's.

have you installed ga as tkwm told you?tater7000@yahoo.com wrote:When I click on virtualbox install guest additions, nothing happens. Also, I cannot find any applications on the virtualbox icon. I am a complete newbie. This is frustrating.
you have sound now or still no sound?
when you run your virtualbox and start your virtual machine then you choose Devices (top screen) and install guest additions.
now go to "my computer" and you should see on D: or E: drive (as tkwm says) vitual box guest additions, just click on it and let it finish and restart.
as the matter for your sound; in your audio settings in virtual box: what have you chosen?
also, you use an audio or midi interface? or you just use your macs soundcard to listen to sounds?
I found install ga's under devices, but it only gets as far as "Installing video driver" and then apparantly freezes. At least it is taking a really long time to proceed, whereas the earlier ga's installed promptly. I think it is frozen. Nothing is happening.
If Virtual Box knows it needs to install the ga's to work, why do I have to know all this? Why doesn't it just install them if it needs them and not give me a product that I have to psyche out to get to work?
I appreciate that the answerers on this forum have forgotten more about this software than I will ever know, or ever care to know. I speak several languages. Computerese is not one of them. You may find this hard to believe, I have never played a computer game of any kind, nor do I care to. I would rather play real golf than computer golf. I do not see that the skills are comparable.

A window had come up behind another window saying that certain of the gas had not passed muster for authenticity or some such. I just proceeded anyway, since I could not understand what it was talking about.
Anyway, this time (but not other times) a "Virtual Box "Icon appeared in the "My computer" window, but nothing happens when I click on it.

Dear Max
I am unable to find audio settings in virtual box.
I do not understand the second question. I just plug my headphones into the computer and sound is there. I don't have to make any special adjustments. The sound does not work on the windows "tour" so I presume it is silent on everything else. My only goal in installing Virtual Box in the first place is with a view to watching the Dallas Cowboys/Texas Longhorns while working in India/Australia. Obviously no sound will compromise the tv experience.

That virtual-box icon in the windows taskbar does nothing. It there to let the user know that the ga are installed. In the virtualbox-preferences under OS-X, not under windows, before you have started the vm, there is a line "Audio" by clicking on it you can change the entries. I use Core Audio and ICH AC97. But your windows in the vm must be shut down, it does not work if you safe the state of the windows from outside.
Max' second question was because he uses an external sounddevice, you are using the mac-internal-sounddevice.
You should also have a look into windows-devicemanager for the installed soundcard, if it says sb16 or something with soundblaser, you will have to deinstall it. reboot and then install the ga again.
On how to find and use devicemanager have a look in the windows help. You can do there a search for devicemanager.
Oh and Computerese is much simpler than any other language, it consists only of ones and zeros, computers don't lie and don't want to "sell you an insurance".

heh, well VB do not need those ga to work.If Virtual Box knows it needs to install the ga's to work, why do I have to know all this? Why doesn't it just install them if it needs them and not give me a product that I have to psyche out to get to work?
those ga makes life easier, i terms of using two system simultaneously and that why we wanna them to work for us
do this as tkwm says:Dear Max

ok, forget it. i understand you on this one, you use the computer sound device.I do not understand the second question.
do the above audio settings and try once again.
if still trouble you know where we are
XP Sound for XP VM running on Vista host
When setting the VBox sound to enable, default is Null sound driver. On my system I change this to Windows Direct driver (only other choice) and teh sound worked.
Yea!! The audio settings change, (having already installed the ga's) to core audio did the trick. You guys are awesome. Doubtful I would have ever gotten around to clicking that particular icon, as i didn't realize it was anything but a list. More of a control panel really. Thanks for being genius'es.
Anybody ever used the d4tv or one of the "watch tv on your PC" programs? Are they scams or do they work and do you have to be a computer genius to get them to work?
Thanks again guys.
PS Lack of computer scams/viruses is one of the attractive things about the Mac OS for people like me. Otherwise it's a scam a minute on the internet, No?
Ever see the t-shirt that says "...guns don't kill people, I kill people"? Always best to beware of "...Lies, and the lying liars who tell them".

nice to see it worked out.
It worked ok. Had some difficulties from time to time with loading the application and get things running.
but it is not smooth
and recently i removed it cause it does not work anymore. wont load the monitor cause of some runtime error.
I have heard that Terratec and Hauppauge is working fine. try to google them and see what you can find on tests.
depending on what kind of signal you have you need to have a dual for both analog and digital signal.
nothing genius in making them work. just install the software, connect the device and let it scan.
well i had for several years an italian produced external Tv tuner device called, Empire Dual TV tuner.Anybody ever used the d4tv or one of the "watch tv on your PC" programs? Are they scams or do they work and do you have to be a computer genius to get them to work?

@Max
I guess what tater wants to use is not an external device like those mentioned by you, but a programm that allows to record and/or download tv-content via internet. By the way, because of possible difficulties with usb in virtualbox the external devices may not work.
@tater
I don't know d4tv. Here in germany there I know two programs that allows to watch tv-content on the computer, one is called free.save.tv the other is called onlinevideorecorder, as far as I remember the url is www.ovr.com. Both work and offer german tv-content, but it is no live stream, they work as a kind onlinevideorecorder, there are other programs, some of them do live-streaming of tv-content, but I havn't tried them.
And tater in your answer I found 2 misassumptions from which one may be dangerous.
At the moment, for Mac-OS-X are only two or three worms/viruses/trojans known. But to believe that on Mac-OS no viruses are possible is dangerous. It's like believing, that in your small village no one has aids, and so one can f**k around without using rubbers. Macs are getting more and more interesting to criminal groups that would like to get your creditcardnumber or even to steal your mailaccount. It's only a question of time when this might happen. Concrete, if your are using a virtualiser to run windows or linux on your mac, you are in danger as with any real windows or linuxmachine, except if you disable the networkdevice, but than you can't use the above mentioned onlinevideorecorders or streamingprograms.
Here are some advices to protect your windows installation from viruses:
Update your OS regulary with the updates published by the OS manufacturer.
Use a Virusscanner, there are sufficent free virusscanners.
Use the firewallcapabilities of you OS and your router, don't connect direct to the internet, use a router with firewall, use a personal firewall like Zonealarm, it's free for personal use.
Here you can find links to free virusscanners and firewalls:

as well as on many other sites.
Be paranoid because of emailattachments! Don't click on attachments you don't expect, or from senders you don't know. Many keyloggers are installed by videos with "explicit" content, you will be asked to download and install a so called "codec", so that you can watch the movie. But with the codec also a keylogger/virus/trojan or other malware is installed. And this also works on the mac. Don't install programs from unknown/unserious sources. Only install programs that you really will need.
Make backups. Make backups. Make backups.
yep. three generations of backups, like the profis do. An old adminsaying goes:"Unsafed data are lost data." Make a checklist for this hints, do things like updates and backups in regular timeintervalls, get routine. Get in contact to your local macusergroup. Get in contact to your local hacker/nerd in your neighborhood. Even if those people sometimes have a long moustache, unwashed long hair and wear clothes from the last millenium, most of them are kind people willing to help you, so that not computers will rule mankind, but humans will rule computers.
