VBox 6.1.14 guest crashing [RESOLVED]

Posted: 14. Oct 2020, 16:29
by tom-linux-mint
I am running VBox 6.1.14 on a linux mint 20.0 machine.
The Mint is running on an SSD.
I am placing my VMs on an internal 1 TB hard drive.

I just tried to create a guest ubuntu server 20.04, but it always crashes during initial installation.
When installing the server OS, it asks if I want to use the updated downloader. I have tried it with both options several times, but the result is always the same.
I have a Win10 guest that crashes about 4 times each time I run it. After a while it settles down and behaves normally.
I don't know if there is a correlation between these two VMs crashing, but I wanted to mention it.
I haven't used VBox very much and I may well have something screwed up.

i would appreciate some help getting this resolved.
Thanks.

A guest log for the crashing guest would help.

Start the guest from full power off, not save-state. Run until you see the problem happen, then shut down the guest from within the guest OS if possible. If not possible, close the Virtualbox window for the guest with the Power Off option set.

Please right-click the guest in the main Virtualbox window's guest list, choose Show Log. Save the far left tab's log, zip the log file, and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

Thank you for the information.
I had to shut down the VM when the crash occurred, and I have attached the zipped log file.

I reran the installation and captured a screenshot when it failed.
I'm not sure how relative the last line is because it seems like it fails randomly during the installation process.
But, I can see the last line was "subiquity/Error/1602692444.847071409.install_fail/add_info \"
I accepted all the default parameters during the installation.

The log shows the guest environment querying the host audio setup. Try disabling guest Audio.

The screenshot shows errors being printed by the guest OS while the Virtualbox guest window stays open and running. Typically this means Virtualbox is still running and the guest OS needs to be troubleshot inside the OS, same as if the OS were installed on a real PC. See what the "information being collected" says, and check with Ubuntu's help channels.

I disabled the Audio on the machine and tried again.
It failed on the very first screen this time.
I discovered that I could view the crash reports.
However, I cannot seem to find any way to export or save the report outside of the VM.
There is an option to enter shell, which I did. I was able to navigate to the report files, but I wasn't able to copy the file to my network server.
Here is a screenshot of the help menu.

Okay.... Success!
Since my VBox was successfully upgraded to the latest version 6.1.14, I had to assume that it was working correctly.
As ScottGus1 said, the errors were within the Guest OS. The Guest OS was an installation iso that was downloaded from ubuntu here:
https://releases.ubuntu.com/20.04.1/ubu ... 1602675349

It just seemed to me that the problem was in the .iso.
So, I looked for an alternative, or another version.
I found a tutorial on how to install ubuntu 20.04 Server at this url: https://www.tecmint.com/install-ubuntu-20-04-server/
On that page, I found a link to the .iso. The link was: https://releases.ubuntu.com/20.04/ubunt ... -amd64.iso

After downloading that iso (which was named identically to the original one I was using [ubuntu-20.04.1-live-server-amd64.iso]), I replaced the original iso file with this one.
I launched the Virtual machine, went through the setup prompts the same as before and voila! Success!!!
It seems that the latest iso has a problem installing within a Vbox. Or at least my Vbox.
I appreciate your help ScottGus1.
