SOLVED Win10 hourly auto shutdown?

Post by h. frogge »

Hello
I have this problem where the win10 virtualbox automatically shuts down after 1 hour even though I'm in the middle of something.

Have change all the powermanagement settings to never shut down.
Couldn't find anything posted about it anywhere.

Any help appreciated.

The virtual machine shuts down because it is not a fully licensed version. 30 days after running the VM for the first time, they will expire, and subsequently shut down after an hour.

You have to reinstall the VM.

What shuts down? the vm, the VirtualBox program, the host?

Ah yes, the vm. The host is win10 too. Also I'm almost certain this didn't happen until a couple of weeks ago. Ii installed a new graphics card driver a couple of weeks ago too.
Dont know so much about vms and what affects them though to me it seems to be a problem from inside the vm.

The behavior of a VM is almost exactly the behavior of a real PC, and the same things can cause the same trouble.

Is the hour an exact hour each time? Then it's probably a timer of some sorts running in the guest OS. Virtualbox doesn't have a timer function to shut down a guest.

If the guest is BSODing and the Virtualbox window still stays open and lets the guest OS reboot, then you'll need to troubleshoot that inside the guest OS using Microsoft methods.

If the guest Virtualbox window is closing abruptly then the Virtualbox guest log will have something in it.

Start the guest from full power off, not save-state. Run until you see the problem happen, then shut down the guest from within the guest OS if possible. If not possible, close the Virtualbox window for the guest with the Power Off option set.

Please right-click the guest in the main Virtualbox window's guest list, choose Show Log. Save the far left tab's log, zip the log file, and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

Are snapshots allowed? this is a log from the snapshot im running from, from last time it happened. Thought I had attached it to the first post( EDIT: That log exceed the 128KiB limit, will post new one later).
Started the vm now and will post a fresh log later too.

I get a shutdown screen where these white dots circle and it says "shutting down" beneath.

So while waiting I decided to look at the different ways to automatically shut down on a timer again.
Didn't find any shut down timers but I found a couple others that try start every 1:00:00:00.

Here is the latest log.

That would be every one day: d:hh:mm:ss

The guest shuts down fairly closely to 1 hour of running:
01:01:39.103002 VMMDev: Guest requests the VM to be turned off
01:01:39.110634 Changing the VM state from 'RUNNING' to 'POWERING_OFF'
I strongly suspect this is a Microsoft Windows 10 IE test VM from an OVA downloaded from Microsoft:
00:00:03.362759 Path <string> = "F:\05 Programs\MSEdge - Win10\MSEdge - Win10-disk001.vdi"
If so, how long have you had it?

You have to reinstall the VM.
Also, FWIW, your host RAM is not empty enough, though fixing this won't stop the hour shutdown:
00:00:03.166949 Host RAM: 8084MB (7.8GB) total, 2103MB (2.0GB) available
00:00:03.362663 RamSize <integer> = 0x0000000139500000 (5 256 511 488, 5 013 MB, 4.8 GB)

Does that mean that I should lower the RAM in the vm? I had a couple of programs running on host while making the latest log.

Please use "Quote" sparingly, otherwise just use "Post Reply".

Reducing guest RAM might cause the guest to run slower, but it might work. Otherwise increase host RAM or run the guest before running the other programs.

And don't forget this part:

Did you check the Event Viewer in the guest if there is an event logged for the shutdown?
There were some Windows test/eval versions which were shutting down automatically after a specific duration.
