When I try to paste text from host directly into emacs, the pasted string gets appended with a bunch of garbage characters (e.g. copy paste "text", what you see in emacs window is: test^@S^P^H..... and so on for 50 more characters.)

When you paste into gedit first, and then from gedit into emacs, everything is fine. Perhaps this is some issue with emacs unicode configuration, but I couldn't find the resolution to the problem by googling yet...
