VB 3.0.6 looses bridged network connectivity on 10.6 server

Post by mcptron »

i' running ubuntu 8.04.3 server inside vb 3.0.6 on osx 10.6.1 server host.
at first everything works out fine, but after a few hours the vm looses network connectivity over the bridged adapter and cannot be reattached any more.

in the system.log of osx i find repeatedly the following message:

kernel.log:Sep 9 12:59:23 pegasus kernel[0]: VBoxNetFlt: was detached from 'en0' (0)

i'm not sure if it's related.

go anyone similar problems and eventually a solution?

thx & rg.

ok, so now after some tries, it appears that this problem also occures for host-only and nat networking.

has anyone similar problems?

I am no MAC expert but the log that shows this error is the MAC log correct? If so you also need to look at the VBox guest log and see if it is indicating anything there. Also look for power management features that may be shutting down the Net adapter on the MAC if it detects no communication for a period of time. Screen savers on the guest may also cause this I think. You can test this by setting up a periodic request on the guest to see if it continues to stay functional like email checks every 5 minutes ETC.

yes it is the hosts log file

i did another test this night, with one ping from the host to the guest per minute over a bridged adapter. the only thing i found in power management of the host was to disable monitor power save to disable, everything else was already off.

the result was: after approx 40 minutes of operation the interface began to stutter and after 3 more hours it went offine completely. see the sections of the log generated the the ping-script:

it's rather weird, isn't it?

Yes it is weird. But I still say that since the guest has no reference to it, it sounds like the shutdown seems to be coming from the MAC side.
I suppose it could be a defective VBoxNetFlt driver. You can try to uninstall and reinstall a new copy of VBox to see if the driver became corrupt on download.
Maybe installing a different OS to see if it operates the same. If this persists you may need to create a ticket in bugtracker. Link is below my post and you will need to setup an account there as it is a different system.

i experience the same issue with 10.6 server with 3.0.6 with windows server 2003 guest. the bridged network connection runs absolutely fine at first, but after a few hours the guests lan connection is not working anymore. i have to shutdown the virtual machine entirely (restarting the guest system or disabling/reenabling the network connection from the menu has no effect).
the guest has been copied over from another system that previously ran virtualbox 3.0.4 under 10.5 and first installed with 3.0.0. the guest additions have been upgraded to 3.0.6 also.
10.6 server runs on a mac mini with only the integrated wired lan connection (airport disabled). also a pppoe internet connection is made (dynamic ip) with that server to the internet

edit: that ticket sounds very similar and has just been created for 3.0.6 by another user http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/4984

maybe we're getting somewhere here after all.

first the bas news: as suggested by Perryg i completely deinstalled vb 3.0.6 and reinstalled it from a fresh downloaded copy. the behaviour is almost the same, only this time net network was up for about 7 hours to stop working completely from one ping to another after that time. no errors in the guest log and no errors in the hosts system.log this time.

but: i get this bad behaviour also on a mac mini (latest generation as of summer 2009) as mentioned above. when trying the same scenario on the same patchlevel of mac os x 10.6.1 (not server, workstation version this time) on my macbook pro with vb 3.0.6, the network connection is rock stable. i suspect the mac mini uses another nic with another mac-os-driver?

I also experience the exact same problem with VirtualBox 3.1.8 and Snow Leopard Server on an mac mini running 2 Debian Linux as virtualized guests. Two weeks ago I updated Snow Leopard Server and also VirtualBox. From then on I experience exactly the same problems. Interestingly I had the same problem with previous Version of Snow Leopard Server and VirtualBox 3.1.6 at the begining. But then, without any changes I made, the problem did not appear any more until two weeks ago.

I can not see any errors reported in any log file and I have no idea how to fix that.

Andy

This seems quite similar to my issue:

http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?t=29884

No solution yet, but a constant ping seems to keep the network adapter alive.

A constant ping command really seems to solve the problem. I did this ping by a daemon placed in /Library/LaunchDaemons. For whom who's interested in, here it is:

Code: Select all

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
	<key>KeepAlive</key>
	<true/>
	<key>Label</key>
	<string>michelangelo-1.ping.plist</string>
	<key>ProgramArguments</key>
	<array>
		<string>ping</string>
		<string>192.168.14.201</string>
	</array>
	<key>RunAtLoad</key>
	<true/>
	<key>StartInterval</key>
	<integer>30</integer>
</dict>
</plist>
