Problem with Seamless and Ubuntu guest
I've been searching for a while to solve this problem, without finding anything, so I apologize in advance if this has been posted many times.
I'm running virtualbox on Snow Leopard, using Ubuntu 9.0.4 (64 bit) as the guest OS. This is running on a 13" MacBook Pro.
I've updated Ubuntu, and installed the guest additions. However, when I activate "seamless" mode, it doesn't seem to work.
Ubuntu goes full screen instead, the ubuntu desktop remains visible, and it covers up all my mac windows.
Is there some trick to setting up seamless mode correctly?
Thanks in advance!

Re: Problem with Seamless and Ubuntu guest
I have the same problem. I'm also running Snow Leopard and my guest OS is Ubuntu 9.04, although I'm on an older, white macbook. Sadly, I haven't any ideas to fix the problem either.

Re: Problem with Seamless and Ubuntu guest
Is the xorg.conf file the same as in my howto (signature)? Are you really using the seamless feature instead of just full screen (either use the Machine menu, or Host + L)? And, last but not least, is a program running visible in the Guest? If you don't have any programs open, seamless would look like full screen.

Re: Problem with Seamless and Ubuntu guest
I tried following the directions in your howto, but when I enter the command in terminal I get this response: "sudo: app-get: command not found." I am also certainly using seamless mode, not full screen. I made sure to open up a few Firefox windows in Ubuntu this time as well, but the result was the same as last time -- Ubuntu doesn't got to fullscreen but maximizes like another OS X application under the bar. I'd post a screenshot, but I'm not sure if or how I can do that here.Sasquatch wrote:Is the xorg.conf file the same as in my howto (signature)? Re: Problem with Seamless and Ubuntu guest
Now I'm sure you made a typo with the command, it's apT-get, not apP-get.

Re: Problem with Seamless and Ubuntu guest
Oops! I fixed the typo, Terminal did it's thing well, I have installed the Guest Additions (unless I need to redo all of that after I've gotten the "build-essential" and "linux-headers-generic" packages...?), and I restarted the Guest for good measure, but there isn't any difference. I tried to check the xorg.conf file like the guide says to, but terminal tells me "sudo: vim: command not found". I triple checked that I copied the command correctly this time, so I'm confident I made no typo.
Also, I just realized there is an "upload attachment" tab below. Here is a picture of what my screen looks like when using seamless mode.

In the text itself, I say that you can use other editors, like vi or nano. I prefer vim now, but it's not installed by default. Nano and vi on the other hand are.
In the picture, I have no idea what mode you've entered, but I'm guessing you maximized the screen, instead of the methods VB offers.

That screen shot is what happens when I tell VB to go into seamless mode.

Re: Problem with Seamless and Ubuntu guest
I don't have a Mac, so I can't really help you any further than advising you to check if the GA are installed properly. You can do that by following my guide and install it again, or simply check the output of lsmod | greb vbox. If it doesn't return any results, then you don't have the GA installed or loaded.

Re: Problem with Seamless and Ubuntu guest
I'm having the same problem with a Solaris SXCE snv_121 (64-bit) guest, same VDI that I'd installedSasquatch wrote:I don't have a Mac, so I can't really help you any further than advising you to check if the GA are installed properly. recently under Leopard, guest additions and all. The mouse moves in and out of the window freely,
suggesting that the guest additions may be in place; but seamless mode is more like full screen than
like it should be.
So I strongly suspect that even if guest additions are installed correctly, there's still a problem with
VirtualBox 3.0.4 on Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard). Not just seamless mode, either - also the
authorization prompts (for a guest that uses certain resources, anyway).

Re: Problem with Seamless and Ubuntu guest
Snow Leopard is a new release and wasn't final when 3.0.4 was build and released. You can't really expect things to magically work on it if Apple changed a whole bunch of stuff in it. You have to wait for the next VB version with official 10.6 support.

Re: Problem with Seamless and Ubuntu guest
Yes, it looks as though it would be best to wait for the next update to VB. I thought that the .iso problem had gone, but I got to the partition stage of an installation of an Ubuntu VM and had problems. But I think that the VM's that were created in Leopard are okay.
