The culprit seems to be SATA disks (not the controller).
I had XP Pro working on 3.0.2 and previous versions using SATA disks, after upgrade to 3.0.4 it seems to enter SUSPEND state during boot (when the pseudo progress bar starts moving).
Changing the dists to IDE (without the need to disable the SATA controller) makes it boot OK.
Hope this helps for reference.
Regards,
Miguel

Re: XP on 3.0.4 "suspends" on boot
Installing 3.0.4 Guest Additions and updating to the latest Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager drivers doesn't help.
It boots if disks are set as IDE but "suspends" at the same point if SATA is used.

Re: XP on 3.0.4 "suspends" on boot
Tested 3.0.5 (build 50978) provided by Sun, and the issue seems to be solved.
Now I can boot OK with SATA or IDE drives.
Let's wait for next official release, in the mean time I'll continue using 3.0.2 which didn't had this issue.

@f21dirk
I'm guessing he got it from the bug ticket mentioned in his second post. Check the Bugtracker for the ticket itself.

Strange that you're having issues with 3.0.4 and SATA boot disk. I have a couple of VMs, including two with XP, and they boot without problems. I think I even created one with 3.0.4. Can you tell me which version of the Intel Matrix Storage Manager you used? I know that the latest, or one of the latest versions don't work properly (either the drive isn't found, or you get a BSOD during setup). I use version 7.8.
