[Solved] Fault outside of MS-DOS Extender (win98 install)

Post by BadAzz »

Hey,

I'm am trying to install Windows 98 SE in VirtualBox but i just can't get it to work.
When I try to install the following error comes:

Standard Mode: Fault outside of MS-DOS Extender.
EC=0000 CS=02EF IP=983E AX=AA14 BX=0000 CX=5E00 DX=005A
SI=0007 DI=CEE0 BP=0912 DS=02E7 ES=02DF SS=027F SP=01F4

I have googled and googled for hour but I can't fin a solution to this.

Anyone who knows how to deal with this problem?

I am having the same exact problem.. slightly different codes but same message. I am trying to install Windows 98SE OEM on a VirtualMachine for some testing and I get that exact same message...... It can occur at two different times. Sometimes right after it partitions the drive and goes to the GUI mode, as soon as I click the "next" button, or once it starts to copy files it gets about half way through and does it.
Standard Mode: Fault outsode of MS-DOS Extender.
EC=0000 CS=0817 IP=2381 AX=0007 BX=0F09 CX-0F00 DX=EE24
SI=006F DI=0000 BP=86A4 DS=0847 ES=0FE7 SS=0847 SP=8682
If tried using the default settings for Windows 98 guest OS, and have tried changing every emulation option and also reducing the amount of RAM it sees and everything. I also had weird random crashes when I installed DOS 7.0 on another VM, which I installed Windows 3.11 on top of. It managed to get through randomly one time and it has worked since.

I'm running Windows 7 x64 RC1 as a host OS on a X58 Chipset motherboard, with a i7 920, and 6GB of DDR3 1600 memory.

Funny. In the last few minutes I was trying again and got it to work. When creating the machine I used the default Windows 98 profile, however I changed the ammount of RAM to 32MB from 64MB, and unchecked Enable VT-x/AMD-V, and unchecked Enable PAE/NX and it all seems to be working. I think RAM less than 32MB helped since that was the only option I did not try. I had tried lowering it to 48MB but it did not work but 32MB did. Odd. Hope it helps!

I have tried many settings, but don't remember if I have tried exactly that. But i'll try.

Thanks Guys,
I was having same problem and started browsing the forum and came across this post.
So followed the advice to reduce RAM to 32MB from 64MB, but had no idea what this bit "unchecked Enable VT-x/AMD-V, and unchecked Enable PAE/NX" meant but ran through setting and found them. The first one was checked but not the last so unchecked it and started again. It worked and Windows 98 is now installed. I still don't know what they are, but WoodburyMan, you're a bloomin' marvel.

Perfect. Thanks.

unchecked "Enable VT-x/AMD-V" and unchecked "Enable PAE/NX"

it Works for Win3.11 and Win98SE

Thanks for the solution.:)

Just thought I'd add that you only need to uncheck "EnableVT-X/AMD-V" and "Enable PAE/NX." You can give it any amount of RAM you want. It's installing for me with 512 MB alloted. 32 MB might be a little restrictive even for Win 98.

I am hosting on Vista Ultimate x86_64 and my guest is 98. I also didn't have a problem with 64M of ram, only with virtualization options and PAE.

The enable VT-x/AMD-V setting is so that the virtual machine can take advantage of your actual processor's features. I'm guessing the older OSes dont like our newer Core family processors.

I know this is an old thread but I just came across it. I'm trying to install a Windows 3.1 guest on my host running XP on an Intel E8500. Iwas getting the same MS-DOS extender error everyone above mentioned so I unchecked the "Enable PAE/NX" and "Enable VT-x/AMD-V" boxes as recommended.

Now Setup crashes in the same spot (setup disk 3 and the "Windows Setup" screen) but with a different error: "Application Error: WINSETUP caused a General Protection Fault in module <unknown>044F:02CA'IWINSETUP will close." Closing that brings me back to the C: prompt.

I'm using 32 MB of guest RAM and trying to set up Windows 3.1 from a DOS 5.0 system. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Update: I tried loading up Win 98 in another VM. With both boxes unchecked, I got as far as the part where Win 98 creates a startup disk, then the error "Application Error: SUWIN caused a General Protection Fault in module <unknown>0437:02CA ISUWIN will close".

Great stuff. I know it's an old thread but I hope this bump will help others finding it via google. I was having the same fault with Windows 98 SE. Disabling Enable VT-x/AMD-V sorted it right out. The emulation seems to run a lot quicker for 98 with it off as well

glad this thread is here. i had the error and deselecting the options mentioned worked like a charm. running windows 98 on a 3GHz pc and even though it's totally virtual - what a kick in the pants.
