CentOS 4.7 guest won't start

Hello,

I am running VirtualBox 2.1.2 on Windows XP Home SP 3. I set up a virtual machine using recent CentOS 4.7 images (Linux kernel version: 2.6.9-78.ELsmp). The VM fails to start up, it only gets to the line "Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel", and is then stuck.

didn't have a problem myself, but i always enable pae/nx/vt-x/acpi (not io apic) so that may well be the issue.

fedora10 64-bit host.

I had the same issue. I selected "CentOS (2.6.9-78.EL)" instead of the default "CentOS (2.6.9-78smp)" from GRUB and it worked fine.

Thanks Oleg, another satisfied correspondent.

Having had several problems in installing a workable image, I used the SMP image with PAE/NX enabled after reading this thread, and it has booted successfully.

Vbox 2.2.4, Host: XP SP/3, Guest: Centos 4.7

I used CentOS-4.7-i386-binDVD.iso as my boot image.

We finally found the reason: The SMP kernel requires PAE support. Enable the PAE setting for this VM and the guest should boot fine (tested with VBox 3.0.4).
