VirtualBox 3.0 - Linux VM's hang.

Post by mlmiller1954 »

I have installed VirtualBox 3.0 in WindowsXP and Windows Vista. My Windows 7rc and Windows XP virtual machines run fine but I cannot get Fedora 10 or 11 to run on either host. Fedora 8 runs but takes along time to load. Any idea on what might be causing the problem?

I'm also experiencing hangs and extremely slow startup (2 hours or more), for Windows hosts booting up Linux VMs running RedHat Enterprise edition 5.3. It was fairly decent under VirtualBox 2.4 but is stalling out on 3.0. Looks like this version is not quite ready. One thing different is that the VM is using a physical partition, rather than virtual disks, I haven't tried the vdisks yet.

I have the exact same problem. It takes 10min to boot fedora 10 and sometimes it just hangs or you can see kernel panics during boot.

3.0.0-Vista[Host]-ubuntu[Guest]-ubuntu VM install freezes

Hi,

Using new VirtualBox 3.0.0.
1st install of ubuntu locked up during installation.
(Configuring apt - Scanning the mirror...)
2nd install of ubuntu became unusable when installing Guest Additions.
(using some instructions I find on Internet from 3rd party)
3rd install of ubuntu locked up during installation.
(Configuring apt - Scanning the mirror...)

Host is Vista Ultimate 32bit and guest is ubuntu Linux 9.04 32bit.
(full specifications below)

Any ideas?
Thanks...

Had the same kind of problem with VBox 3.0.0 under WinXP too trying to install Ubuntu 9.04 - if you "disconnect" from the internet (i.e. no "scanning the mirror" happens) , the install works fine - the problem returns later though:

Installed Ubuntu without Internet access - worked
Installed Guest Additions - worked
started Ubuntu/ Gnome Update Manager - VM always hangs on "downloading package information" after successfully having loaded and processed already a dozen package infos

I guess the latter seems to be pretty much the same mechanism as "Scanning the mirror" during the setup and goes brain dead for the same reason

I had the same problem, Kubuntu 9.04 hung when doing an update. I was able to resolve the issue by changing the network adapter from "PCnet-FAST III" to "Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop".

I have also observe problem with last virtualbox. VM hungs when i updating and ssh connection go down when I'm connected to remote server. It's upset me :x

to unipsycho: I will try your approach

edit: changing the network card didn't help, still disconnecting ssh. i have to back to 2.2.4 until fixing the problem

Host OS: Windows XP SP3
VBox 3.0.0
Guest OS: Kubuntu 9.04

@unipsycho - thank your for that hint - hat the same issue with vbox 3.0.0 r49315, an Win XP SP3 Host and an ubuntu 9.04 guest. No problems with VBox 2.4.4, but after updating to 3.0.0 guest freezes after some seconds of network acitivity :( . Changing networt adapter to "Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop" helped for me, too :D .

Same here with Ubuntu 9.04 VM - hard lock after short period of network IO.

Also the upgrade changed my VM video memory setting to 12MB from 128MB. Truncating a string before time there maybe!

XP Host, Ubuntu 9.04 guest. Was freezing when downloading large files - including Ubuntu upgrades. I can confirm that unipsych's tip fixes this. Previous versions of VBox didn't have this problem.

I can confirm the problem (vm hang during download) and the workaround (selecting "Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop" as virtual NIC) on VB 3.0 on Windows XP guest with Ubuntu 9.04 host.

I'm also having the same problem....

As soon as Ubuntu does some network activity it freezes. Could install after skipping the language downloads. Guest addition install went fine.

Now testing the workaround with other network adapter...

Edit: Workaround seems to be working, no freeze since change and downloaded all updates (took 30minutes)

In another section of this forum there are several people with the same problem.
Take a look here:
