ubuntu7.04

Post by MoonKid »

I tried to install ubuntu-7.04-desktop-i386.iso on a VirtualBox machine
with WinXP as host machine.

The install cd starts and I select "install". Then the ubuntu logo with
the orange progress bar is shown. After some seconds my own physical pc (not the virtualbox machine!) make a "reset".

There is no freez, no error message. It is just as I would press the
reset button on my physical machine.

Did anyone tried to install ubuntu on VirutalBox?

I tried it in a fresh and new created machine.

VB runs on WinXPSP2

How much RAM do you have? Ubuntu Feisty (because it a live CD) needs 512 MB RAM for the guest system only plus 265+ MB for your XP. Did you configure that?

I've tried to install the Ubuntu Server 7.04 using a Debian host, which doesn't boot as a LiveCD. It boots to the boot menu which allows for CD testing, install, Memtest, etc. When I boot to either the CD test or the Install, it says it loads the kernel, and then just sits there at at black screen indefinitely. I have it set to use only 256mb of ram, but that should be enough.

I'll try the memtest too, and I'll see what happens when I bump the ram to 512, but I don't think that will help. I'll post my results after I test some more.

Anyone have any ideas, or get it to work yet? I'm trying to install directly from the iso, and I've confirmed via the md5 sum that it didn't get corrupted in the download.

Thanks for any input!

Feisty and a long cup of tea ...

Post by b4truth »

Host Ubuntu 6.0.6 with 1 GB RAM, 512 MB dedicated to guest Ubuntu 7.0.4.
After no success with Ubuntu 7.0.4 live I installed the alternate CD. It took only 4 hours  (Had a long cup of tea, a shower, a chat with my neigbour and walked the dog).
It went through without problems but it is quite slow. It needs 5 min to boot with 75% + CPU usage of the host machine. I installed Fedora 5 and CentOS on the same machine without problems.
What to do?
Something eats up the resources in Feisty and I can't figure out what it is ...

I did try to install it with 512mb ram and it didn't have any effect, it just sits there at a blank screen with a cursor in the top-left that I assume should be blinking, but isn't (this is installing 7.04 server, not desktop).

I also tried doing the memtest, and that boots into the test, but then the console window that I started the VM from gives a lot of errors etc and the VM locks up (probably because doing a Memtest within a VM is just stupid...).

Anyone know why Ubuntu would be having this problem?

Same here: Ubuntu 7 leads into a black screen after booting it. Looks like it have frozen.

No matter if desktop or alternate install: Both are leading in a black screen.

Ok, so here's my current status.

I installed Ubuntu using the alternate CD into a VirtualBox VM using my windows PC as the host, and it boots up perfectly there. I then transfered the vdi file to my debian box to host it. I boot it up and it does successfully boot to the boot menu, and then changes to the "Starting up..." screen, and just sits there.

If I change the boot menu to tell it to boot to recovery mode, it gets past the "Starting up..." prompt, and scrolls the screen a bunch, but then stops at:

Do note something that I forgot to mention before. This debian box is NOT an Intel or AMD processor, it's a Via C7 1.5Gz cpu.

I'm not sure if that would be what's causing my problem, or if it's that I'm hosting it on linux instead of windows (my windows box is a P4). But this VM boots fine in my windows host, but not here on this linux host.

Just a note to add to this.

Last night I found out that with a Debian Etch VM install, I get stopped at the same place. This time though, if I enable both ACPI and IO APIC that then it gets past the hangup.

This has only worked with Debian Etch sofar though. I tried the same trick with my Ububtu 7.04 VM and it didn't work. It did get it past the blinking cursor, but then it goes into a scrolling mania of errors followed by an eventual kernel panic.

Bigger and Better development now!!!

When I told my cousin of last night's findings, he suggested I try passing some options to my Ubuntu kernel at boot, and it worked!!!

Passing noacpi noapic nolapic to the kernel at boot let it boot properly!

Very good! Thank you for that hint! I just installed vbox 1.4.0 on Etch and had the same issue again. Adding noacpi noapic nolapic helps!

It works badly for me with 1.4. The noacpi nolapic noapic options helped me install Ubuntu on the hard drive image but it keeps working very slowly. I manage to login but then it just sits there if I choose a standard Gnome session. Failsafe (terminal) seems to work. This is on a Sabayon 3.4 loop2 host.

edit: Seems non working audio was the culprit.

Well, I may as well post my experience with ubuntu 7.04. I got it installed using VB 1.4 with a Vista Host. Everything went very smoothly except for one thing. After setting up all of the partition table data, the ubuntu installer would come up with an error indicating that it couldn't make the swap partition. It happened several times.

My solution was to use my archlinux install CD to make the partitions, then boot ubuntu. It installed perfectly after that.
