Virtualbox Freezes System Everytime (Ubuntu 9.04)

Post by chaps0063 »

All,

I am running Ubuntu 9.04 (2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 01:58:03 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux).

I downloaded VirtualBox 2.2.2 from here (virtualbox-2.2_2.2.2-46594_Ubuntu_jaunty_amd64.deb).

Installed fine and starts up fine. I created a new guest, pointed the CD/DVD to an ISO on my local disk and fired it up. It will load the menu for the installer (tried Windows XP 8 in 1 and Debian 4.01) and then it will freeze. Not just the guest or VirtualBox, but my entire system requiring me to power cycle the system. I have tried to start it up with audio/network/etc disabled.

Preferably I would like to get VirtualBox 2.2.2 working for USB support.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Brad

Can you check you bios and make sure that VT-x/AMD-v is enabled.
Also if this is the Windows OS try to give it standard memory allocations 256, 512,1024.

I am unable to verify that it is enabled in the BIOS. My BIOS does not display that information. (Acer Aspire 4530).

I attempted to install with it enabled and increased the amount of RAM to 512MB. This made it past formatting the hard disk, however it locked up upon copying the files.

I am now running through an install with it disabled and it appears to be running properly.

The reasoning it is so odd is that a few days ago I was able to get this to work. At that point I decided that I wanted to completely switch my primary OS to Ubuntu and virtualize Windows. I formatted my system and reinstalled Ubuntu onto a larger partition. Everything else was exactly the same (install-wise). This was running in the virtual mode.

I am not sure why, how, or what may have changed. Is it possible that something is not being processed correctly with my host OS that is causing it to freeze?

Thanks,

Brad

You are not the first person that I have heard say that. The best thing that you can do is to try to update the bios and if that does not work you will need to contact the manufacture. I know this sucks but the hardware V is really important to have working correctly for all of this to work.

It's just odd that it worked previously.

I'm 100% certain I never disabled it prior to formatting my system...

I read through some information regarding Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 SP1. I read that it will not work without hardware-assisted virtualization. I was able to successfully install and configure it in Windows 7 on this system.

Any thoughts on that?

Hello,

I have the same problem on the same Acer 4530 Build 6823 with Jaunty 9.04 AMD 64 with Nvidia 180.60 drivers, Virt Box 2.2.4 PUEL. Most Windows (XP, 7, Vista) (not sure if 2000 should be allowed to do it) with AMD V extensions enabled periodically hang the system (most likely x-server) because on several occasions the system managed to log me out without dying. The hangs are pretty bad, no cutouts work. Have to hard reset the system. Amount of ram allocated to the guest does not seem to matter for me. I have 4 GB (with 3.6 available to the OS) VMs range anywhere from 512 to 1500 MB.

CPU is AMD QT-62 and the BIOS is the newest 3335 version (even newer than on the acer site).

If any devs can help I would volunteer to check if its our system BIOS or kernel modules or x server, just need instructions. Apparently this system is quite popular.

I am not experiencing the same problems with opensolaris 2009.6 or Linuxes (32 or 64 bit)

Thanks

@tiras_dude: Your situation sounds exactly as mine. I began having problems again and haven't had time to get back to post. I've tried reinstalling my system several times and to no avail. I tried the 32-bit version of Ubuntu and still no luck. Likewise I am also willing to try anything. I've since had to disable VT so I can use my guest.

It seems so odd that it will work for a few minutes and then hang the system forcing a hard reset. I'm just not sure what route to go anymore.

Again, any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Brad,

I think we should file a bug report, but in the mean time make sure you add these repos to your apt:

x-org
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/xorg-edgers/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/xorg-edgers/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main

Key for file (make blank text file and paste the stuff that begins below) then go in authentication tab in software sources (authentication tab, import file)).

Than update the system.

Once you do that Ubuntu will generally run cleaner (no Firefox hangups) but Virtual Box will still misbehave.

Ok I added a bug report Ticket #4179

http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/4179

One thing I noticed when redoing log files, is that running system monitor in gnome keeps the machine more stable, but not for long.

I'm at a loss myself.

Processor: Intel Core 2 CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz (Total Cores: 2), Motherboard: XFX XFX Nforce 680i LT, Chipset: nVidia C55, System Memory: 7881MB, Disk: 400GB WDC WD4000AAKS-0 + 320GB WDC WD3200AAKS-7, Graphics: GeForce 9500 GT 512MB (550/500MHz)

OS: Ubuntu 9.04, Kernel: 2.6.30-020630-generic (x86_64), Desktop: GNOME 2.26.1, Display Server: X.Org Server 1.6.0, OpenGL: 3.0.0 NVIDIA 185.18.14, Compiler: GCC 4.3.3, File-System: xfs, Screen Resolution: 1440x900

Compiz was running on this system.
Intel SpeedStep Technology was enabled

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r225688 ... duo-Ubuntu

No matter which kernel I uses, guest OS, Compiz no compiz, speedstep on or off, the ONLY way to get a host OS to run is to disable the very important VT.

I solved this for me. The cause, garbage BIOS (ver. P08)from XFX for my 680iLT. I had to use the BIOS for the board above mine (ver P33). Once I flashed to P33 BIOS for this board, ALL is well. P07 does not have the best Wolfdale support. P33 has the best support. I had no idea I had to use a BIOS that was NOT designed for my board in order to solve this issue for me.
